It's hard to tell what a liberal is these days, doncha think?

I've seen people who are war hawks label themselves liberal.

I have seen unabashed capitalists label themselves liberal.

I have seen anti choice people label themselves liberal.

etc etc etc

4. Liberals...
"The Fascists will shoot you.
The conservatives will applaud the Fascists.
The moderates will watch the executions on TV.
The Liberals will cry over your grave and feel guilty for turning you in to the Fascists."

SDS saying.

6. The problem is that the term liberal is dynamic.
A person can have liberal stances on social issues like pro-choice, immigration, equality for LGBT, women, and minorities, but can have economically moderate ideas.

Who gets to say who fits into the "liberal" club or not?

I consider myself to be liberal. I am pro-choice, pro union, anti-war, against the idea of military or economic imperialism. I think that the problems we are having with immigration are a result of interventionism in the politics and economics of our neighbors and that there is a racist element to it. I believe that consenting adults have the right to be married, I believe that we are a secular nation based on the rule of law not on any Judeo-Christian heritage. I have been involved in social services for mentally ill and developmentally disabled people for 16 of the 20 years I have been working. I believe that the government is necessary to help correct injustices caused by the accumulation of wealth and power by the wealthiest individuals. I believe in progressive taxation with no loopholes and that our taxes should be used to make sure that we have good working infrastructure, and that no one should ever go to sleep hungry or without a roof over their head.

However, I own firearms for self defense. That in and of itself would drum me out of the "liberal" club immediately.

Again, who gets to decide who is a liberal?

9. And from that level of BS comes the meme that 90% of progressives love Obama.

I know many on here even, who claim to be liberals prove themselves over and over to not be liberal by any definition that I'd accept. Add to your list,

Those that think GLBTs should learn to wait their turn,

Those that believe public education should go to private charter schools

Those that think Gibbs, Rahm, Bernanke, and Geithner were/are okay choices.

Those that believe any of the stimulus is really helping middle Americans get/keep jobs or their homes.

Those that believe mandates without a public option is just fine.

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of now.

13. I bet you'll have as much luck with that legitimate query as I did with my simple request for a name
Making sweeping assertions without a shred of evidence to back them up seems to be the order of the day with this OP.

14. From history, because this is important
you do know that John Stuart Mill, one of the paragons of CLASSIC liberalism, was an unabashed Capitalist?

Classic Liberalism does not mean you are opposed to Capitalism. If you understand this as the clash of social classes, classic Burgoise versus Capitalist, then you are misusing the term in a classical sense and be better off using the term Socialist, or Communist, depending on how far you are in accepting that world view, and ideology.

(Political Science can and is loads of fun huh?)
