Poll question: Do You Agree with Gibbs
The White House is simmering with anger at criticism from liberals who say President Obama is more concerned with deal-making than ideological purity.

During an interview with The Hill in his West Wing office, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs blasted liberal naysayers, whom he said would never regard anything the president did as good enough.

“I hear these people saying he’s like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested,” Gibbs said. “I mean, it’s crazy.”

The press secretary dismissed the “professional left” in terms very similar to those used by their opponents on the ideological right, saying, “They will be satisfied when we have Canadian healthcare and we’ve eliminated the Pentagon. That’s not reality.”

Of those who complain that Obama caved to centrists on issues such as healthcare reform, Gibbs said: “They wouldn’t be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president.”

11. Gibbs. Doesn't. Get. It.
You don't antagonize the BASE 90 days from an election unless your desire is to lose so that you can blame 'obstructionism' on the next 2 years. Had they actually held an FDR-ish administration, they would have found the BASE at their back.

I am mystified as to what this demoralizing screed was designed to accomplish.

23. I don't see where he is wrong.
The people that think Obama = Bush are idiots. There is no question to that.

I have seen many people on here and elsewhere demand that we get something parallel with Canadian health care even if there is no discernible route towards getting it.

I have also seen people on here demanding that we slash the defense budget to nothing as a means to pay for whatever the issue at the time is.

I think a lot of people just don't like having their noses rubbed in it.

35. Heck no
For that matter, I'm still trying to figure out what the "professional left" is. Coming from the mouth of a person holding a paid political job, that sounded pretty darned strange!

I cannot honestly call myself a leftist, because when I figure out where I stand on the issues I am all over the map. To me, workability and decency toward other human beings are the primary concerns. If those two tests are passed, then I opt for liberalism, which I think has been demonstrated to work over centuries to produce a better life for all. So on some policies I wind up with a position that is on the extreme left, and on some occasions I might end up being somewhat to the right. I write all of this just to justify my remark that not only am I not a political professional, but I probably don't qualify as a leftist. Nonetheless, while I have been irked at some criticisms of this administration which I feel are unfair, there are many criticisms of this administration which seem very justifiable to me.

I absolutely support the right of everyone to dispute policies of ANY administration. I don't think our country can survive if we stop. I think if people just sat down and shut up about problems this administration would be hurt over time, not helped.

Politics is not feasible if the people aren't involved as well as the politicians. It is the people who really know what is going on at any given moment, and whether a proposed policy will be workable or not. ( Not individually, because we all know only whether it will or will not work for us. But collectively, we can figure out whether a given policy will work or not, and we are the only participants in the political system who can. )

I did not get hysterical about this comment, but I am highly skeptical of the apparent DC emerging meme that the people are the problem.
