It's a givin that Obama has done little to please us on the left lately, DADT, bailouts for the rich, endless wars, ect. not to mention broken promises, like putting bills online for 5 days, allowing imported drugs, reduce earmarks, ect.
A politicians biggest concern is to be re-elected, and he stands a much better chance if the republicans have a majority in the house. People are not happy and something has to give, if the democrats still hold a majority in both houses, his second term could be in jeopardy, unless of course things get a hell of a lot better in the next 2 years (doubtful).
Again, it's just a theory.

He sure seems to be alienating his base...

Maybe there's a method to his madness.

4. Sure, because he'd get so much more accomplished with a Republican House.
:sarcasm:

5. All I'll say is that his chances of re-election may well be better with a Republican House
and that the administration has considered that probability.

Whether this (or any other action) is intended to bring that about (and hence deflect the blame for failing to achieve efficacious results) is another matter.

No way to know. In this case, it's probably just Gibbs expressing his derision for progressives again.

8. With a Republican House, Obama can safely be a Democratic hero....
Heck, he can even veto a bill or two before signing a compromise. It really does enhance his reelection chances.

Neither Obama nor Gibbs want to see the Repubs take the House. No way.

I'm not happy with everything Obama's done, and I'm really not happy with what Gibbs said, but they aren't stupid. And trying to orchestrate a Repub takeover - for any reason - would be really, really stupid. Repubs would be completely free to drive the country into the ground, and the Democratic president would still get the blame. To think otherwise is to deny history.

10. Actually, I wonder if it wasn't a layup for a populist stance in response
to try to salvage the mid-term.

Time will tell.
