HISTORIC: Mexico City's same-gender marriages must be recognized throughout the country
Mexico, more progressive than the US on equality:

======

Another great ruling from the Supreme Court of Mexico. Same-sex marriage performed Mexico City are valid -- and must be treated the same as hetero marriages -- everywhere in the country:

Mexico's supreme court has ruled that same-sex marriages in Mexico City must be recognised throughout the country.

The ruling does not mean other states have to allow gay weddings on their territory.

Two of the court's 11 judges voted against the measure, arguing that it would damage the harmony of the federal system.

Last week the supreme court ruled that the law allowing gay marriages in the capital was constitutional.

The court will now consider the legality of allowing adoption by gay couples.

This would be akin to our Supreme Court saying marriages performed in Massachusetts or Iowa must be recognized everywhere in the United States.

If get a chance, go. You'd love Oaxaca. I want to go back and see the Frida Khalo house. Let's see, marriage equality, cheap health care, amazing art. Oh, if I wasn't starting back to school next week...

6. That may have been the ruling. But no, Mexican society is not
more progressive or open. To the contrary, there is a very strong social hatred and dislike of gays, etc., in all the latin american countries. It is akin to a deep seated inequality in gender, and bias and prejudice from the catholicism.

20. That is true for some sectors of Mexican Society
yes I grew up down there.

And yes there is racism and all that, but legally... and institutionally forwards looking

Hate to bust that bubble.

26. I don't know what bubble you think you're busting, but others don't seem to
agree with you. There is a problem in Mexico. And quite probably it's a problem thru' out the entire world to some extent.

30. Ok I talk from experience
I have treated patients who are gay in Mexico.

I have also family who is gay in Mexico City.

And in some places they do face the same kind of problems gay people face here. But in others, like law... they have made incredible advances.

So what is YOUR experience?

Institutionally I'd have agreed with you 20-25 years ago... these days... not so much.

21. So true unfortunately
I have several gay friends from Mexico that are afraid for their lives (and for good reason I might add). HIV still has a stigma that rivals that of the US in the 80's.

22. This is a class issue. Wealthy gay experience differs from impoverished

Issues of class are continually being muddied and obscured, it's very depressing.

15. So, my gay union is "illegal" in America, but "legal" in Mexico.
How poetic. I'm more "legal" in Mexico than here in the U.S.

What a rightwing rot we've become here.

I was there during the debate to make weddings legal
some of the arguments were exactly the same as our conservative RIGHT WING makes here... they still lost.

Mexico has made giant strides in some respects, while in others (release the army for example in the war on drugs)... they have taken giant steps backwards... let's just say some aspects of human rights are enough to make you cry.

I tried to sign up in community college, but I was the only one. They canceled the class. Must learn Spanish and work on French.
