Americans More Unhappy With Republicans Than Democrats
from Alternet, citing the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll: http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy/2010/08/12/poll-americans-unhappy-with-dems-way-more-unhappy-with-gop/

___ President Obama’s overall approval rating stands at 47%, up a little from the last poll, but his handling of the economy and the war in Afghanistan have lost public support. The public now supports the way he’s dealt with the BP oil spill disaster, a turnaround from June, and overall, seven in 10 believe Obama has met or exceeded their expectations as president.

The rest of Washington fares much worse: (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38665351/ns/politics/)

A combined 60 percent say that this year’s Congress is either below average or one of the worst in history — the highest percentage in the history of the NBC/WSJ poll… In addition, a whopping 72 percent disapprove of Congress’ job.

The political parties don’t fare much better. Just 33 percent have a positive view of the Democratic Party, versus 44 percent who have a negative view.

As for the Republican Party, only 24 percent see it positively — the GOP’s lowest-ever rating in the poll — while 46 percent see it negatively.

I continue to see this as one of the year’s more important trends. As deeply unhappy as Americans are with the status quo, Republicans have not yet improved their public reputation or standing. In 1994 and 2006 — the last two cycles in which the majority party lost both the House and Senate in the same cycle — the minority party gained favor. This year, just three months before Election Day, the Republican Party’s favorable rating is still at an all-time low.

1. This is why I don't think November will be a blood bath...Dems will lose some
seats probably, but the Repukes don't have anyone other than the criminally insane running.

21. A lot of incumbants from both parties will get whacked.
But I don't think it'll be a bloodbath for Dems either. We're very lucky the other party sucks major amounts of ass.

3. we do need to ramp up the anti-republican vote
. . . as these midterms are almost always dominated by folks voting 'against' something rather than participating primarily 'for' candidates.

Chicago - Illinois deserves better.

But it won’t get better until we all demand it. That’s why we’re starting something new tonight. We live here. We love this place. And we’re as sick at heart as you are to see it sink this low. We share your frustration and anger over the lack of political will to tackle the overwhelming financial problems facing our local and state governments.

My name is Mike Renda. I’m the General Manager of FOX Chicago. We bring you 37 hours of news coverage per week. We cover all sides so that you can make up your own mind. We’re redoubling that commitment. We’ve hired some terrific new people in news. In this all important election year we’ve expanded our coverage to bring you even more of the information you need.

Because the decisions we all face have never been more important we’ve decided to offer you our editorial opinion. You can take it. You can leave it. We welcome you to respond on myfoxchicago.com - Please know that these opinions will be separate and distinct from the coverage provided by our news department. At the end of the day we do believe that “Illinois deserves better.”

6. I CONTINUE to contend that downballot Dems will do well.
And look at the Senate races where teabaggers are running on the mainstream repubican ticket. I can't imagine more than one of them getting in. And maybe not that.

Obama is what he is, but he's not on the ballot. Yeah, I know. The party in power is supposed to lose seats. I just think that, as awful as the dems seem to be, the repubs are far worse.

This election will be all about "(S)he's not as bad as the other guy."

Which is a shitty commentary on our country's state.

8. "not as bad as the other guy" is pretty standard in congressional races
Kinda of appropriate when you look at what stands as a republican these days. In fact, we'll need some good old antipathy toward the cretins to generate the turnout we'll need to be successful. These midterms usually favor the 'anti' voter. The batch of kooks lining up so far should do to persuade our Democrats to the polls.

9. WooHoo, we're the best of the worst!
:woohoo:

You know, no matter where the Democrats come out in this poll, the fact of the matter is that this is not something that members of either party should be proud of.

Frankly, most of the folks I know and talk to hate both parties.

14. Yeah, maybe I do,
Like maybe old school Dems and progressives who put people ahead of politics, real live breathing human beings ahead of corporations. Yep, good idea there, thanks.

12. Who said we were proud of it?
The OP's just pointing out that the bluster from the GOP is just that: bluster. People hate them even more than they hate us.

13. we have some good candidates who we should support
It's primary season now, but we don't really have the luxury in the general election to be apathetic about supporting our Democrats.

16. They might be your Democrats, but they certainly aren't mine
Not when they attack me, my profession, my life. Sorry, but I don't vote against my own interests, I'm not as dumb as a Freeper.

You worry about voter apathy, well then quit having the WH press idiot going out and pissing off the base. Stop this administration from attacking members of the base. Then you wouldn't have to worry about this fall.

19. I don't imagine it's in 'your interest' for a republican to gain the seat
. . . perhaps for decades because of the benefits of incumbency.

No one said our political choices were easy. Our political responsibility doesn't just end at the point of whatever issue we represent, defend, or work to change. There's much more at stake in these elections.

20. My political responsibility at this point is to vote for whom I agree with the most on the issues
If that is a Dem, fine, if that is a 'Pug, fine, if that is some other, fine.

I refuse to be herded by fear tactics and such. I've watched the corrosive effects that such fear tactics have had on this country and I'm simply not going to participate in them anymore. Looks like the Dems will have to work to get my vote, not simply try to scare it out of me.

22. "if that is a 'Pug, fine"
I've never found a 'pug' who can represent my interests. They are institutionally inept and dangerous to those. That's not just fearmongering, it's the reality.

and the Republicans, who they FUCKING HATE.

I think the GOP's in for a surprise in November.
