7. A note of irony -
Liberty University Law School got its start by buying Oral Robert's Law School.

6. You mean like the Cato Institute or the Carlyle Group?
I agree, but some examples would have been nice...

9. I think there has been MORE than enough of the Falwell defender threads
What is wrong with celebrating the death of a hate filled racist homophobe bigot? My God,the dirty deeds that filthy phony jerk has done doesn't deserve any respect.

Did you happen to hear about the "Clinton Cronicles".......the horrible tape he put out on the Clintons which was nothing but LIES? And you and a few others think the rest of us should keep silent on the relief we feel that he is finally SILENCED? Sorry.....I am HAPPY that demon is gone......now I'm just waiting to hear about a few hundred other rightwing nut phonies going to meet their "maker".I am sick and tired of these people trying to shove their extremist views down the throats of Americans.Let them believe the way they want to believe.......but they can keep their sadistic views away from ME!

12. It's a bit of a stretch to call me a "defender"
I'm not saying I don't feel a little ray of sunshine on the inside knowing he's gone, but I'm not proud of it, and I wouldn't crow about it.

14. What would your response be if you were a
Jew (or a Gypsy or Gay) and Hitler died midway through that war?

17. Gee, I don't know. Probably relief.
But somehow I don't think Falwell is quite in Hitler's league.

13. I was reading an interesting analysis about societal trends--how things that
initially horrify society gradually become accepted. I think it was in John Dean's book, but I'm not sure. The conclusion was that very rarely do any of the people who highly disapprove ever change their minds. Societal change happens as younger generations accept the new ideas and the older generations die off. So, yes, I think a little progress was made today.

16. That's an interesting point, on a macro level it may be true...
But Falwell's problem wasn't his age. He was just a snake-oil salesman, and the intolerance and scapegoating were all a part of the package. Unfortunately, the Falwells of the world have groomed a whole new generation of even scummier evangelists, like Ralph Reed, to succeed them.

Look at that bastard's eyes and tell me you don't see the soulless eyes of The Beast.

19. Oh, I've been keeping an eye on that one for a long time, too.
It was rewarding to see him get dragged down with the Abramoff scandal. There's probably a bunch of others we haven't even heard of yet, ready to step to the head of the line.

15. Fallwell lived a long life doing what he wanted to do and getting rich doing it.
Edited on Tue May-15-07 06:43 PM by BurtWorm
He was the image of self-satisfied sanctimony, hated roundly for the unending flow of hatred from his own mouth for all of his years, and he seemed to love being hated. He got the life he asked for. What harm can a little hate on his death day do anyone, really? True, he can't enjoy it. His "side," however, is loving the spectacle of the left's outpouring of uncensored sentiment, just as much as he would have. This side is enjoying the freedom to continue into Falwell's death expressing the contempt for him his whole life merited. No one is harmed except those who wish the vitriol would just stop. And maybe the family. Here's hoping they have the feelings to be hurt that Falwell didn't--not because I wish them hurt, but because I wish them real human feeling.
