Democrats urge Alvin Greene to drop Senate bid after indictment
Democrats urge Alvin Greene to drop Senate bid after indictment

By John O'Connor | The State

South Carolina Democrats called on Alvin Greene to end his bid for U.S. Senate after his legal troubles got more serious Friday, but there is not much hope among party leaders that Greene will abandon his long-shot campaign.

A Richland County grand jury indicted Greene on two charges of showing obscene images to a female University of South Carolina student at a campus computer lab.

Greene faces a maximum sentence of five years and a $10,000 fine for disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity, a felony, and a maximum three-year sentence and $10,000 fine for communicating an obscene message to another person without consent, a misdemeanor.

13. They already tried once
Right after he was "elected". Didn't work. Greene wouldn't budge, and had no other recourse, apparently. What I don't understand is why they didn't press harder for a more thorough investigation into election fraud. Probably because the GOP owns this state, and they are the ones who control those little black boxes on which we vote. In most counties, anyway.

2.  Can't the democratic party REMOVE him?
He should NEVER have been allowed on the ballot and I don't believe the "investigation" turned up nothing "unusual"..

The man committed fraud when he said he was indigent and had a public defender IF he actually had the money necessary to pay his way into the race..

This stinks to high-heaven , and is so like a republican stunt.. They knew DeMint would probably win, and just wanted to have a little fun at our expense, by getting this doofus to run as a dem... What fun for them to have a semi-literate person who's been indicted for a sex crime..

There needs to be a morals clause that prevents someone from running, if they are involved in pending criminal charges.. Even if they are innocent, surely they need to spend the time & money on their defense...and if found innocent, they can run later on..

4. The party itself can't remove him. They have to use state laws in effect.
And the fact someone is under indictment does not prevent someone from running.

I don't think states have jurisdiction on the criteria regarding civil or criminal convictions. They have jurisdiction for state elections not including federal elections.

7. Is that because they all had a cushy 10 year free ride when the RW was destroying our country
They did nothing, fought against nothing, rolled over with such ease and not even a whimper of protest.

It seems like they were quite comfortable not having to do anything for a decade.

3. But being indicted on an obscenity charge
wouldn't that make him more capable of bi-partisanship?

6. Republicon Handlers Urge Sockpuppet Greene to Stay the Course
"Greene is just doing the republicon family pharisee values thingy, so we definitely want him to stay where we put him: in the race. Smirk."

8. I hope he gets elected.
What better payback for the GOP than to have their candidate beaten by the rube Dem candidate that they implanted, and subsequently hacked the vote for?

9. When it walks like a duck...
How clearly do we have too see a completely corruption of the voting system by the GOP?
Wasn't Florida and Ohio enough?
We will idly sit by while Democracy is slowly crushed.
The Tea Partiers are right, but it's the people the support who have stolen this country.

10. The Democratic party in South Carolina
Turn the clock back about 50 years to the freedom riders of the early '60s. If you get the picture of a few brave colored folk, a couple transplanted Jews from the Northeast, and smattering of white hippies all meeting surreptitiously so as not to draw the attention of the Klan prematurely, that would be your picture of the SC Democratic party.

12. I can't even feel bad for the party on this one they brought it on themselves.
The results of the primary were contested. The other candidate made the case that something was amiss. They couldn't be bothered to look into it and just verified the clearly flawed results. Why? Probably because they didn't want to go into issues of potential electoral fraud. And now its come back to bite them in the ass. This is the type of shit that pisses people off. Their cowardice on the electoral fraud has put them in this situation and I really can't muster up much sympathy. There's no chance in hell of winning in this contest. It's a lost cause.

15. If the Democrats could offer him a good high-paying job,
Greene might consider not running for the senate seat. I understand he
has been unemployed for a long time. :o)
