Neil Young to play Gulf Coast tour
By Christina Wilkie - 08/12/10 01:40 PM ET

Rock legend Neil Young will play a series of concerts this September on the Gulf Coast to raise money for families affected by BP's massive oil spill.

The tour will focus on hunger relief, and Young has teamed up with Tyson Foods to sponsor the events. Tyson will also donate 100,000 pounds of chicken to the Bay Area Food Bank, which serves Central Gulf Coast communities in Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi.

Young will appeal to concert-goers to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the food bank, and all proceeds from T-shirt sales will also be donated.

“Millions of people who live along the Gulf Coast struggle with hunger," Young said in a statement, "And the economic impact of the oil spill has only made matters worse. I appreciate the willingness of John Tyson and his company to get involved by helping the regional food bank help feed those in need. We both encourage concert-goers to spend money locally and support local business."

Tickets will go on sale Thursday and Friday for the following dates:
Sep 20: Panama City, Fla.
Sep 25: Biloxi, Miss.
Sep 26: Mobile, Ala.
Sep 28: Pensacola, Fla.

1. Alabama........ We used to do that song as coversong
back in the days I was in a band.

Oh Alabama
The devil fools
with the best laid plan.
Swing low Alabama
You got spare change
You got to feel strange
And now the moment
is all that it meant.

Alabama, you got
the weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back.
Your Cadillac
has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track

Oh Alabama
Banjos playing
through the broken glass
Windows down in Alabama.
See the old folks
tied in white ropes
Hear the banjo.
Don't it take you down home?

Alabama, you got
the weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back.
Your Cadillac
has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track

Oh Alabama.
Can I see you
and shake your hand.
Make friends down in Alabama.

I'm from a new land
I come to you
and see all this ruin
What are you doing Alabama?
You got the rest of the union
to help you along
What's going wrong?

Neil, even CSN agreed was and still is a genius.

6. Southern Man
Southern man
better keep your head
Don't forget
what your good book said
Southern change
gonna come at last
Now your crosses
are burning fast
Southern man

I saw cotton
and I saw black
Tall white mansions
and little shacks.
Southern man
when will you
pay them back?
I heard screamin'
and bullwhips cracking
How long? How long?

Southern man
better keep your head
Don't forget
what your good book said
Southern change
gonna come at last
Now your crosses
are burning fast
Southern man

Lily Belle,
your hair is golden brown
I've seen your black man
comin' round
Swear by God
I'm gonna cut him down!
I heard screamin'
and bullwhips cracking
How long? How long?

Neil young's legacy will out live any Lynyrd Skynyrd song or thought.

11. Well, I think both will be remembered for a long, long time

but Young is obviously the higher quality artist.

I suppose my post is that there are many Southern Man who have turned the corner and welcome Mr. Young.

5. That darn Neil Young.
Using his celebrity to help others.

Also, in addition to being a profoundly decent human being, some of his musical compositions are wonders, and if you are a DUer who is without AFTER THE GOLDRUSH, for example, get on-line and download a copy without hesitation.

12. There was someone on XM Jam On doing a Neil Young Cover last week
Edited on Sat Aug-14-10 11:54 AM by rufus dog
Sixteen year old daughter made a comment and I told her it was a Neil Young Cover. Her response, who is Neil Young?

This reminds me to crank some Neil Young this weekend.

8. Yes, the story in the Mobile paper...
...well, the online version of it, was already drawing comments from folks saying they wouldn't attend because of Young's "Southern Man" and "Alabama."

They aren't too fond of his "lib'rul" politics.

15. I purchased my first Neil Young album in Alabama back in 1969.
"Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" with Crazy Horse, and after that the CSN,&Y stuff, "Harvest", and "After The Gold Rush". Those were the Golden Years for rock.

Back in those days, many fellow southerners my age were on the liberal side of the issues. Many of them started changing in the 1980s and are now Limbaugh listeners and Fox News watchers. They go to Southern Baptist churches, join the country club, and wouldn't get caught dead listening to their old favorite Neil Young album. Peer pressure and over 20 years of brainwashing has taken it's toll.
