They think it is somehow going to benefit the American citizen.
That it will bring down prices at the pump.
They either are ignorant of, or choose to ignore, that it is removed by multi-national based corporations beholden to no country and enters the world petroleum market where it makes not even a ripple.

Hence the ridiculously ignorant bumper sticker/slogan:

1. It should be 'our oil' as in the commons belonging to citizens

Since it is all so murky the only thing I think its 'they' the ownershit class thinks that they are the owners of any community property and its their profit and they are flat out lying to us and have been for years. Why do oil cos get our tax$ as subsidies they they never pay the taxes or the subsidies back to us We the people.

2. Saw one of those bumper stickers yesterday

on a rusted out land yacht driven by a person obviously on SS and Medicare. There was a McCain/Palin and a pro life sticker on the other side.

The growing scarcity of "easy oil" and the shift to "hard oil" is going to keep your gas tank full. But it will be a $200 tank, not a $50 tank. And you'll soon be paying more to heat your home than you pay for a mortgage.

There's too much money invested in the petroleum business model, and just enough invested in both Democratic and Republican lawmakers to keep the political landscape oil friendly.

A global economy now means that there will never again be a healthy economy and cheap oil.

But oil is a global commodity. Even "our oil" will be selling at global prices unless all three branches of government find the courage to impose some draconian protectionist rules. I see plenty of hubris in evidence, but little courage. Courage will be shown with a lawmaker's corporate masters tell him or her it's important to appear courageous to maintain the democratic illusion.

There is always the potential for renewable fuels. But I don't think the renewable fuels industry can afford to buy that kind of courage in Washington.

So...

Drill here? Sure
Drill now? Okay
Pay less? A belief based on ignorance, which, like hubris, the U.S. currently has in abundance

Then there's the whole climate change thing that always gets ignored in supply/demand arguments.
