DNA mutations/cancer risk “become MORE of an issue” as oil breaks down -VIDEO: LSU Cancer Expert
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KicMxz7Mipc

LSU Toxicologist Talks About Health Risks In the Gulf, Project Gulf Impact, August 14, 2010:
Dr. Vincent Wilson is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at Louisiana State University specializing in Environmental Biomonitoring and Carcinogenesis.
Dr. Wilson discusses the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contained in crude oil.

Rush Transcript Summary

Humans/animals metabolize PAHs. This turns the PAHs into carcinogenic material that binds to DNA. The PAH reaction with DNA makes it mutagenic and carcinogenic.

Long-term exposure to low levels of PAHs is the cancer problem.

Lungs (inhalation) and liver/multi-organ (ingestion) are top cancer risks from PAHs.

PAH compounds become MORE of an issue as oil weathers and breaks down… concentration increases.

PAHs are lipid soluble.

Benzene concentrations are likely very significant.

Could be months or years before cancer shows up.

For anyone out there, the risk of cancer has gone up.

With Benzene, you wouldn’t even know if taking in toxic doses.

Still concerned oil is beneath the surface, closer to the bottom.

1. If it is true that the benzene sinks to bottom
Then it will have highest concentration on shell fish beds. Really seems like that was the intent, could have been from some extremist.

2. Toxic Concentrations of Benzene and other Aromatic HCs Transported Long Distances from BP Spill
On July 15, NOAA found high concentrations of unspecified hydrocarbons in the air over Gulf shoreline cities. Some of that was inhaled or fell into groundwater and onto crops with rainwater. More remains in raw petroleum droplets dispersed throughout the Gulf or has sunk to the sea bed, where indeed PAHs and other toxins, including Corexit, have fouled shellfish beds in detectable quantities in a wide area around the spill site.

Tragically, as I've been saying, the real health consequences of the spill are just beginning. The remarks of this toxicologist reinforces that.

7. It would helpful to have some actual data showing there are high levels of PAHs.
without data its just speculation.
