National Socialists outnumbered in Knoxville protest
Swastikas flew on the courthouse lawn Saturday as National Socialists marched through downtown for a rally against illegal immigration.

"This is part of our Stand in The South," said Jeff Schoep, commander of the Detroit-based National Socialist Movement. "It's about the survival of America."

About 50-60 members of the NSM made the march from Market Square to the courthouse on Main Street, past heckling from more than 100 counter-protesters and surrounded by 400-500 police.

"Nazis, go home!" the hecklers shouted.

"We are home," came the reply.

1. I suppose a lot of desperate things
come out of Detroit.
Too bad we couldn't make it back into a prosperous city.
Then the NSM would certainly go home.

2. Why the attack on Detroit?
A city that votes Democratic at a higher percentage than any other big city, and such a post in the name of snark?

3. That was not an attack on Detroit.
It was an attack on the social neglect that has made Detroit one of the most impoverished cities in America.

The Nazis home is only an issue if Detroit residents choose to make it one. I would have posted this story even if the numbskulls with the swastikas were from my home town of Nashville which I guarantee has it's share of white supremacists. In fact, in 2008 some locals burned a mosque in Columbia.

Here are a couple of links to learn more about the story:

6. The whole State of Michigan has been neglected mainly for 3 reasons
1) it was the automotive capital of the US 2) it supported unions 3) it was a liberal state with few pockets of conservotard nit wits that tended to vote for the Democratic party. Reagan's anti union attacks of the 80's made sure Michigan would be a target for the right, I saw the crap the religious right started right before Reagan's election and started hearing anti union tirades often by union members, odd thing was when they were told that if unions were so bad why didn't they opt out of the union, their reply was they couldn't live on non union wages, yet never saw the hypocrisy.

Because of Reagan being pro corporation which allowed down sizing and out sourcing, Michigans automotive industry started on a down word spin of massive lay offs and factory closings, which meant people started leaving the state for greener pastures in other states, which insured a decline in liberal voters in the state while conservotards numbers started going up, mainly because the fence sitters started seeking answers to their woes in religion, the 1980's saw an increase of the numbers of houses of worship. Then because of tax dollar loss big cities started seeing less money to run the cities, which never really recovered fully before Bush took office.

7. I agree.
I think conservative and corporate vengeance has been at work ever since the 1970s.
The American public creates a middle class by way of unions and activism and the men of power can't take the heat.
So they lash out.
And they continue to lash out.

5. This is how the Nazis recruit. The show up, get outnumbered, and then appeal to youth as oppressed.
They've been using this tactic for 25 years at least and the counter protesters fall for it every time.

8. Obviously the Nazis don't have local support. I live in Knoxville
and didn't know about this "demonstration" until this morning. And, to top it off, I only live about four or five miles from Market Square.

Glad more in my city protested than demonstrated.

Oh - and I don't know why there are so many comments about Detroit above. The city of Knoxville is far from blighted, even during this economy. And, the city is Democratic. Granted, the county of Knox is so red it could pass for the Communist USSR flag - and it always turns the whole county red on the maps - but the city is very blue, voting for Gore, Kerry and Obama in subsequent presidential elections (for example).

9. I don't think the nazis have much local support anywhere.
Every once in a while they hold one of these rallies. The protesters always outnumber the nazis. The only people who win are those in law enforcement. They draw lots of overtime pay.

These rallies are just a big farce, a circus. Of course most people don't like the nazis. They should stay home. We laugh at the tea baggers when no one shows up to their rallies. We should make sure that no one shows up to the nazi rallies as well. Ignore them.

10. Well, I ignored them.

I didn't even know they were going to be down the street. :hi:

Looks like, from the article, the police paid more attention to them than the protesters.
