"Thank God that in this country we do not vote on people's rights."
The African American Democratic person on John King USA just made that comment.

Hey, buddy, tell that to the members of the Gay community that are fighting for marriage equality.

Sorry, as usual I was only paying half attention to the tube while doing something else. John King had this guy and the obligatory Republican person on to debate the "mosque at Ground Zero" issue.

Just sent this email to the show:

For the gentleman who made the statement, "Thank God we don't vote on people's rights in this country." : He needs to review the history of African Americans and Jim Crow laws. AND since that period is hopefully gone forever, he should also look at the groups that are fighting for marriage equality in this country. The RIGHTS of gay and lesbians to equal happiness has been voted away in many states NOW.

Yes, we absolutely do vote on people's rights in this country and it needs to STOP.

9. And against same sex marriage
My take is that when a particular religious belief system is the only argument to block something, in this country, that makes it unconstitutional, Basing our laws on a limited religious sect's idea obviously is passing law abridging the religions of others.

6. And the ERA - which was defeated
Since marriage equality is the current top of the list issue, that is what came to mind. I hate seeing African Americans ignoring the past when it comes to others' rights, but then women have constantly thwarted the efforts of other women to have equal rights and control of their bodies. And plenty of groups allows themselves to be split into pro and anti against their best interests. It has been used and will continue to be used against average people while the rich and privileged can live whatever kinds of lifestyles they wish.

There is a long of peoples' rights that have been voted on in this country. And it all needs to stop.

8. Absolutely... and sadly we have two cohorts of younger women
and girls, who know nothing of the struggle for women's rights and that those rights were never ratified.

10. So many young women today are falling back into the old thought patterns, too
Where women follow the mandates of their male partners. They may not be as far back as we were in the 50s and 60s but they are not as free as we tried to be in the 70s and 80s.

2. Prop H8 should have never made it to the ballot!
It gave the bigots false hope.

We need more control over ballots, imho... the shit that gets on them these days is scary as hell. And the descriptions in the voter guides are equally terrifying. No wonder there are so many uninformed and ill-informed voters.

7. And neither should the piece of crap that was passed here in Florida
Frankly, I think the Founding Fathers had the right idea with making amendments difficult to pass. The states that have made it easy, notoriously California and Florida, have passed some really stupid measures.
