Hallowed Ground: The Last Full Measure of Depravity: Developers Push For Gettysburg Casino

The Last Full Measure of Depravity: Developers Push For Gettysburg Casino
Published 1, August 18, 2010 Politics , Society 3 Comments

We have followed earlier controversies involving the development of Civil War battlefields and historic areas by Disney, Walmart, and other corporations — often with the help of local politicians bent on trading their heritage for short-term gains. We can now add Gettysburg where local politicians have been pushing for a Gettysburg Casino over the objections of preservationists.

3. My wife is from Gettysburg...almost every yard I've seen has a sign for or against the casino.
Hard to say with any certainty where the public as a whole stands based on the signs, though, as I usually only travel in certain areas of town. But it's definitely not something the populace is ignoring.

8. It would be just over 5 miles from the center of town.
They're trying to get it at the current location of the Eisenhower Hotel, which is south of downtown on Rt. 15.

10. How close is it to any of the Gettysburg skirmishes?
There's the Gettysburg National Military Park. Which entirely protected.

There's the Gettysburg Cemetery, which is also protected.

Then there's the historic district, which AFAIK, is just kind of an extended neighborhood with both public spots and private businesses.

Would anybody really object to this if it were some other business? A hotel perhaps? Or a highway?

11. I'm pretty bad with distances that can't be shown by roads on Google Maps.
:) Pull up Eisenhower Hotel on there, and you'll get a good idea of how far it is from the actual battlefield.

12. What I'm really asking is...
is this people really worried about "hallowed ground" is it just the ubiquitous anti-casino people?

two blocks away from the WTC. Where in the Constitution does it say Congress shall make no laws respecting establishing of casinos. Hmmm I bet the developers are Republicans. A Few years ago someone wanted to build a theme park there.

6. Why isn't the media getting outraged about this?
This is Gettysburg where tens of thousands of American soldiers died during the Civil War.

In fact it's estimated about 50k soldiers are buried at Gettysburg, which is much larger than the 2750 that died at the WTC on 9/11.

I'm waiting for Faux News and the right-wing nut jobs to show the outrage of building a casino on Gettysburg.

7. Here's a hoot. The local Holiday Inn wants it, not enough rooms - they're claiming RV's are rooms!!
No joke. There's one license and multiple hotels trying to score it. The one in Gettysburg is just sickening, but this one is simply a source of laughter. The Holiday Inn is in Mechanicsburg, right off of 581 and about 2 miles from Rt. 81, so it is in a pretty good location. It doesn't have enough rooms to qualify for the minimum required by the state, so they bought (maybe rented) a shitload of RVs and parked them in the lot and call them "rooms". I crack up every time I see them.

9. Is it on the Union or Confederate part of the battlefield?....

It doesn't really matter just throwing it out there. I would think the hosting corporations would want to fix some of the seedy places they already own. I've stayed in some cleaner dumps frankly. A casino is not more likely to get me to visit, a clean bed and a bar well thats my ticket. I visit that area a few times a year and they are running the tourist stuff into the ground. A really good hotel now goes for $168 a night weekend event gouging.(Carlisle, Gettysburg, Camp Hill, Shippensburg). Didn't it take years to fight the tower.

13. Shoot...what can be more American than Greed?
I don't see any incongruity...two great symbols of our American Heritage side-by-side.
