Man with hot dogs in pants arrested
Posted: 08/17/2010

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. - A man accused of hiding two pounds of hot dogs in his pants before leaving a grocery store sans paying faces a misdemeanor theft charge, according to a recently released arrest affidavit.

A loss prevention worker at a Publix at South U.S. 1 and Prima Vista Boulevard last week told investigators she saw a man later identified as Allan Polhemus on aisle five "conceal a package of hot dogs in his pants," an affidavit states.

The 32 ounce package of Publix jumbo beef franks was valued at $6.99. The wiener packaging describes the dogs as "meaty & delicious" and as having "no fillers."

The loss prevention worker told St. Lucie County Sheriff's deputies she contacted Polhemus, 52, in the parking lot and asked him to come back in the store. She said a manager called 911.

Deputies took Polhemus, of the 6100 block of Birch Drive in Fort Pierce, to jail and took photos of the franks, which often are served in a pre-sliced bun with relish, ketchup and mustard.

:wtf:

Since when has the news reported stories of theft, offering descriptions of the product and the best serving methods? This sounds like a commercial for the product.

59. Funny eh? If one person is allowed to steal a pack of hot dogs then everyone will steal a pack
of hot dogs... the total breakdown of society. :silly:

Yeah, I agree, the man was hungry and broke most likely. Sad.

I'd have offered to pay.

and I hate jumping on such an obvious bandwagon.

That, and my first thought was about some poor guy stealing food. It makes me want to cry that people are driven to that in today"s America. There just wasn't anything funny about the whole story. Not to me, anyway.

22. When I was a kid (in the early days when I went to church)
Edited on Wed Aug-18-10 10:01 PM by jtuck004
my pastor left the big church (too much political crap, too much about money) and went into business, back in the late 60's as I recall. Bought a Hotsy Hot Dog stand in Texas. One day he noticed one of his employees, mostly Mexicans, handing a big can of pickles out the window. When he asked him about it, the kid confessed that his family was hungry, and they were going to eat the can of pickles that evening. He sent the kid home with dinner for everyone.

A few weeks later he sold the stand, moved back to Oklahoma City, took a low-pay job as the pastor of the run-down little church on Main Street downtown. From there he ran a food program for the rest of his life, visited the sick, intervened in family disputes, especially where women or kids were being beaten (was amazing to see this 5'4" guy get between a drunk and their target, just because he thought he was called to do it).

One of the few people I have ever really admired. And one of my first introductions into how much need there is out there.

I wonder if the guy above was just hungry.

If the store or employee showed any compassion or leniency, the place would be crawling with people who are desparate for food. The thought of jail is the only thing that keeps millions of needy citizens from doing the same.

people are reduced to having to steal to feed themselves. This guy is probably out of unemployment and underwater in his home and is doing what he thinks he must to feed his children.

It's shameful in a country that is supposed to be the Land of Opportunity.

Here is the layout of this incident:
