Event to commemorate 25th anniversary of Hormel strike

http://www.workdayminnesota.org/index.php?news_6_4591

16 August 2010

AUSTIN - This year marks the 25th anniversary of the landmark strike at the Hormel plant in Austin, Minn., by United Food and Commercial Workers Local P-9. It will be commemorated with a special program Saturday.

About 1,000 workers went on strike in August 1985 to resist wage cuts and protest unsafe conditions. Their cause attracted national attention. The strike first galvanized the labor movement, then divided it.

Participants in the Hormel strike and P-9 supporters plan an event Saturday, Aug. 21, to commemorate the P-9 strike. Organizers encourage arriving early for the event, which will begin at 2 p.m. at American Legion Post 91, 809 12th St. SW, Austin (across from the Mower County Fairgrounds).

A program from 2 to 5 p.m. will feature speakers and music, followed by an open mic at 5 p.m. for anyone to speak. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m.
