Miss USA Rima Fakih discusses mosque near Ground Zero
By ANGELA LOPEZ
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

Miss USA Rima Fakih of Dearborn spoke to “Inside Edition” earlier this week about the controversy brewing over plans to build a mosque near the World Trade Center site in New York City.

“I totally agree with President Obama regarding freedom of religion,” the former Miss Michigan said while rehearsing for the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas.

The 24-year-old, who is Muslim and was born in Lebanon added, “It shouldn’t be built so close to the World Trade Center. We should be more concerned with the tragedy than with religion.”

Critics say a mosque shouldn’t be built near the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, but President Barack Obama has said the mosque should be allowed, as “Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country."

3. Right now, the issue is about being bullied out of building the center
by associating it with terrorism because of the faith of the builders. It's gone beyond about an issue of sensitivity.

12. Well, there is this from the Park51 website

http://www.park51.org/facilities.htm

“a mosque, intended to be run separately from Park51 but open to and accessible to all members, visitors and our New York community”

13. Is a hospital with a chapel a cathedral?
Keep pushing the hate.

You left out "a world-class community center, planned to include the following facilities:"

This is a community center, similar to a YMCA or a JCC.

14. I don't recall anyone ever saying hospitals do not have chapels. However,
Edited on Sat Aug-21-10 10:12 AM by Obamanaut
one can read here, and elsewhere, that the proposed construction under dispute has no mosque. The Park51 site suggests that they do.

If they think they do, and they call it by it's name, why do so many insist on denying there is one?

15. The community center includes a mosque, the community center is not a mosque.
Again: is a hospital run by a religious organization that has a chapel a cathedral? Is a YMCA with a chapel a church? If not, then why the double standard?

What has been said here repeatedly is that this is not a mosque, it is an islamic community center.

Calling an islamic community center a mosque in order to fan the flames of bigotry is dishonest bullshit.

And of course there is nothing wrong with building mosque or a community center that contains a mosque anywhere it is legal to do so, and there is a lot wrong with demanding that muslim americans not build anything that includes a mosque within some ill defined region around the wtc.

6. She looks skinnier in that picture than in others I've seen.
Maybe it's just me, but I thought the great curvy hips were one of the most attractive qualities on Mediterranean women.

10. Not a sensible statement at all
Wishy washy statement that Muslims should just not rock the boat and accept the persecution.

Who cares how hot she is. Has no bearing on whether or not Muslims should tolerate this crap.

8. Woman whose only "qualifications" to speak on the matter
Edited on Sat Aug-21-10 12:32 AM by ThomasQED
are that she is a Muslim and judged more attractive than most others. Post about her opinion quickly devolves into discussion of her body (more posts about that than her statement already).

Film at 11.

On edit: I don't know if the headline you have is what was on the article at the time - the one in the body of your post and the one at the link are both different from it - but I'd say "Headline Exhibits Bias".

On 2nd edit: She says we should be more concerned with the tragedy than religion, but apparently she also thinks we should be more concerned with the tragedy than our freedom. I guess I should get to bed because now I'm getting angry :-P

11. After the nastiness the deranged righties threw at her
for daring to be Muslim *and* <gasp!> win a beauty pageant, I'm not surprised she's being (overly, IMHO) cautious on this subject. I think she's wrong, but oh well... I've had my mind boggled by more than a few people who've sided with the xenophobic right on this issue over the last few days.
