WikiLeaks founder Assange wanted in Sweden for rape
AFP - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is wanted in Sweden where he has been accused of rape, the prosecutor's office said Saturday.

"Julian Assange is wanted for two different issues, one of them is that he's suspected of rape in Sweden," the director of communications Karin Rosander told AFP.

He was unable to say what the other accusation was or whether the search warrant was international.

According to the Swedish daily Expressen, the 39-year-old Australian is also wanted for assaulting a woman.

1. There's been several other threads about this already.
Clearly a Pentagon/CIA-orchestrated misinformation campaign aimed at taking him down.

They couldn't get at him any other way, they figured they'd try to ruin his reputation with false "rape" allegations.

9. Wow, they said they were going to be speaking with the Swedish prosecutor's office.
So there really are actual charges, its not just a tabloid allegation at this point.

This is bad -- really, really bad.

If they can silence Assange by simply locking him away as a de facto political prisoner on trumped up charges, it doesn't bode well for whistleblowers elsewhere.

I just hope he has contingency plans in place to pass the torch on to someone else at WikiLeaks in case he gets arrested and can't make bail. Rape and molestation are serious charges, bail could be set as high as $1 million, making it impossible for him to bail out for however many months it takes until trial. Even if he is acquitted, the process could ruin him.

DIRTY!

13. Heard the interview
Pretty run of the mill until they asked her if he was going to be arrested. And the prosecutor said "That depends on the charges"

:wtf:

Charges sound pretty serious to me. Can't imagine why they wouldn't arrest him if they find him.

2. Y'know everything so far written about this is referencing the same
"Expressen" as the source. I'm beginning to think this is a case of one lying source, then every other source jumps in as though they know something without actually checking it out. Kind of like ACORN and VanJones and the lovely lady recently from USDA, sorry, I've forgotten her name.

Sounds like made up tripe, that we don't need to be setting out as fact so we don't look stupid when it turns out to be entirely bogus BS

15. Similar to when Faux "called" the 2000 Election and the other networks jumped on the train...

...without checking for accuracy.

(But, considering it was trumpeted at Faux by John Ellis, Jeb Bush's cousin, it was *going to be* the outcome.)

We know how that turned out. And, it corrupted the next eight years.

Lots of good examples of media herd mentality you listed, Better Today--- ACORN, Van Jones, Shirley Sherrod...

This is how *the public manhunt* begins for Julian Assange. Been watching this hogwash for too long.

WikiLeaks founder Assange wanted in Sweden for rape, AFP

August 28, 2010

.....

Kristinn Hrafnsson, a colleague of Assange's who spoke to AFP from Iceland, said that the charges against him were false.

"He didn't know of the charges until he read them in the right wing tabloid Expressen this morning", Hrafnsson said. "There are powerful organisations who want to do harm to WikiLeaks."

Hrafnsson said Assange was still in Sweden and would "go to the police very quickly."

Last week Assange announced at a press conference in Stockholm that the whistleblower website was set to publish a final batch of 15,000 secret documents on the war in Afghanistan in "a couple of weeks."

21. Swedish prosecutor withdraws arrest warrant for Assange : 'Rape allegation lacked substance.'
Sweden withdraws warrant for WikiLeaks founder

August 21, 2010, 2:48PM ET
By KARL RITTER

AP

Swedish authorities revoked a short-lived arrest warrant for the founder of WikiLeaks on Saturday, saying a rape accusation against him lacked substance. ..... WikiLeaks is preparing to release of a fresh batch of classified U.S. documents from the Afghan war, despite warnings from the Pentagon that they could endanger American soldiers and their Afghan helpers.

A Stockholm prosecutor issued the arrest warrant on Friday, saying Assange was suspected of rape and molestation in two separate cases. But chief prosecutor Eva Finne withdrew the warrant within 24 hours.
"I don't think there is reason to suspect that he has committed rape," Finne said in a brief statement.

Karin Rosander, a spokeswoman for the Swedish Prosecution Authority, said Assange remains suspected of molestation, a less serious charge that would not lead to an arrest warrant.
"The prosecutor hasn't made a decision" on that count, Rosander told The Associated Press. "The investigation continues."

.....

A WikiLeaks spokesman, who says he goes by the name Daniel Schmitt in order to protect his identity, told AP in a telephone interview from Iceland that the "extremely serious allegations" came as a complete surprise.

Apart from the comment from Assange, WikiLeaks' Twitter page had a link to an article in Swedish tabloid Expressen, which first reported the allegations.
"We were warned to expect 'dirty tricks.' Now we have the first one," it said.
On its official blog, WikiLeaks expressed "full support" for Assange and said it "will be continuing its regular operations."

.....

Assange told Der Spiegel in an interview that he likes confronting the powerful. "I enjoy creating systems on a grand scale, and I enjoy helping people who are vulnerable," he said. "And I enjoy crushing bastards. So it is enjoyable work."

Carry on.

4. Why bother with assassination when character assassination
works just as well and it's easier to cover up. Take Ted Kennedy as an example of how this maneuver is accomplished.

11. I suspect the same
No need for small airplanes or grassy knolls these days

Innuendo and slander.

Being in Scandinavia it really hasn't been on the national news here.

We shall see if there is any truth to it.

16. I unrec'd because I don't want to see a title like the one on this OP to make it
to the front page. I know it is what the title of the story is, but I still don't want to see there, and if it makes it to the Greatest page it could get to the front page. I did rec the one on the same topic that is titled something more to the effect that Assange said some shit would happen. Same story, better title for our group I think.

NEWS IS SO FUCKED UP IN THE STATES AFTER LOOKING AT IT FROM AFAR
and seeing now what is being pushed on Americans where the rest of the world
sees through different lenses.
