'Patriot' Paranoia: A Look at the Top Ten Conspiracy Theories
by Alexander Zaitchik

Conspiracy theorizing has flourished as a virtual art form in all nations and across all political persuasions. But the American radical right has to be considered a strong contender for the title of modern conspiracy champion. A vast body of academic literature exists exploring this history, of which Richard Hofstadter's 1964 essay, "The Paranoid Style in American Politics" is the most famous. Hundreds of books and articles have chronicled the rise (and fall) of an unceasing march of disparate conspiracy-based movements that, at different points in American history, have trembled before and warned against imaginary threats posed by Catholics, Mormons, Jews, American Communists, Freemasons, bankers, and U.S. government officials and agencies.

Scholars continue to debate the psychological and sociological origins of conspiracy theories, but there is no arguing that these theories have seen a revival on the extreme right in recent years. Over the last two decades, a far-right conspiracy culture of self-proclaimed "Patriots" has emerged in which the United States government itself is viewed as a mortal threat to everything from constitutional democracy to the survival of the human race. This conspiracy revival — which has been accompanied by the explosive growth of Patriot groups over the last year and a half — kicked into overdrive with the 2008 election of President Barack Obama, who is seen by Patriots as a foreign-born Manchurian candidate sent by forces of the so-called "New World Order" to destroy American sovereignty and institute one-world socialist government.

Since Obama's election, the constituent theories within the overarching narrative of the New World Order have increasingly made inroads into the mainstream national discourse. Thanks to conservative cable news hosts like Glenn Beck (of Fox News) and Lou Dobbs (formerly of CNN), conspiratorial rants about FEMA concentration camps and the "North American Union" have been beamed directly into the living rooms of millions of Americans. Websites popular with Tea Party conservatives, meanwhile, have further stoked fears of a socialistic one-world government takeover by "un-American" forces. Joseph Farah's WorldNetDaily.com, for example, has grown its influence by peddling paranoia about the president's birth certificate and AmeriCorps' "domestic armies." Earlier this year, the John Birch Society, a group with a long history of hatching and promoting wild conspiracy theories (including the idea that President Eisenhower was a communist agent), co-sponsored the Conservative Political Action Conference, an annual powwow of leading conservatives and Republican Party figures. Speakers at this year's conference included such mainstream names as Washington Post columnist George Will, former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner.

Here is a compilation of 10 of the most popular conspiracy theories currently circulating on the radical right and, increasingly, on points of the political spectrum much too close to the center for comfort.

6. Yep. Conspiracies are popular here at DU as well. Occam's Razor notwithstanding
the simple explanation is often not preferred and rejected because it is too simple.

8. Lunacy knows no politics
At the very least the Chemtrails and the 9/11 stuff has been espoused by both sides.

10. 2, 5, and 6
Were discussed seriously after the Repube congress passed laws making martial law easier to declare (for example, in an economic crisis) but that was later repealed. Blackwater mercenaries and sheriff's deputies were forcibly disarming people in New Orleans in the wake of Katrina. And we still think that 9/11 had a lot of positive fall-out for BushCo.

7. Rec...so its the government, international organizations, the masons,
the Democrats, Mexicans, Canadians and (of course) the Jews that are making the weather different and causing all those patterns in the sky in order to kill most real Americans in order to open up much of the space in the US to create a "bioshpere".

Well, that explains a lot.
Seriously, I believe the GOP has been catering to these people's craziness for years.

Amazing.
rec - thanks.

12. 9/11 as a government plot?
Mistakenly described. Well, maybe the RW think so. I don't know, I don't read freeperville. Some here do, maybe they can tell us what the RW claims?

Our side knows it was nothing more than bushco/bfee members. That the rest of the government was not involved. Although too may gov. folks have worked hard to coverup the situation.

And did the source in the OP miss the number 1? The one that says Al Gore is creating Global Warming along with the left?

21. I mean
fbi,cia,sec... John Kerry might not have been involved but he certainly played a role in the BCCI scandal investigation. You can't say that isn't important because old poppy was heavily involved with the Iran/Contra and it's no coincidence that was the heyday for BCCI. What happened to Bush? Nothing! He and his cronies were in power then and were in charge on 9/11.

22. Ted Kennedy
Kennedy wasn't involved in 9/11.

That whole BCCI thing... didn't Kerry crack that? It was a bushco op, indeed. Kerry must have made some real enemies in those days.

15. Interesting subject, but confused as to why Southern Poverty Law Center would
support such a distorted view of conspiracy theories --

And, many of these issues have been brought to our attention by the left --

Chemtrails are an admitted program by the government -- not much info disclosed on it --

as to who is carrying out program or chemicals being used -- but it is labelled a

"weather modification" program in Congressional legislation.

FEMA -- like many of our government agencies it has been manipulated by the right wing --

and believe that Homeland Security is still with us sucking of huge amounts of money?

9/11 --Anyone looking at the official story would have trouble defending it vs the many

challenges to it -- including the faked '93 attack which could have been stopped by our FBI.

HAARP -- has been mainly kept a highly secret project -- why wouldn't Americans be suspicious?

As JFK made clear so long ago, secrecy only aids and abets our enemies, including our

internal enemies.

FED Reserve? This is a private banking system, unaccountable even to our GAO.

And why wouldn't trade agreements create suspicion with 22 million American underemployed

or unemployed?

Obviously, this was a list prepared by someone who wanted to confuse and misinform readers.

Let's see now ... Eisenhower was suspicious of the MIC -- and Intelligence community --

which had betrayed him on more than one occasion. IKE warned us about the MIC ... does that

make him a "patriot" nut?

Our Founders fear the power of capital -- were they nuts -- or are we still struggling with

the corruption and criminality of capitalism? Has capital bought government and its agencies?

UFO's are oddly not present on the list -- why?

President Nixon, Reagan, Carter, Clinton were all highly interested in the subject of aliens/

UFO's --

Carter was told by Director/CIA Poppy Bush that he, Carter, didn't have a high enough security

clearance to see the UFO info! Why Carter didn't fire Bush's ass, I don't know -- but

obviously the Bush family prizes UFO info above info on atomic weapons!

Actually, the greatest conspiracy before our eyes is patriarchy and organized patriarchal

religion -- and the economic system the Vatican developed: capitalism!
