GOP candidate: Use prisons as ‘welfare dorms’

http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0821/gop-candidate-prisons-welfare-dorms/

By The Associated Press
Saturday, August 21st, 2010 -- 5:46 pm

Republican candidate for governor Carl Paladino said he would transform some New York prisons into dormitories for welfare recipients, where they could work in state-sponsored jobs, get employment training and take lessons in "personal hygiene."

Paladino, a wealthy Buffalo real estate developer popular with many tea party activists, isn't saying the state should jail poor people: The program would be voluntary.

But the suggestion that poor families would be better off in remote institutions, rather than among friends and family in their own neighborhoods, struck some anti-poverty activists as insulting.

Turning prisons into helping people, not helping people into prisons.

It may be that they are getting rid of the prison, or it may be slaveholder mentality.

Many groups like to use food and shelter as a way to force someone to be like them, if you don't agree to their rule set, even if they can not defend it, they try to make you scared of starving or dieing.

So it depends on the intent, and how it was implemented, for instance no doors, no locks, and people in the community deciding who administrates the area, not someone else.

Prison for welfare recipients? WTF? And what about people who can't work due to a disability? This guy is a real piece of work. No wonder the teabaggers love him.

13. Those dirty stinky poor people
Does this guy think that welfare recipients (which he probably equates to homeless people) smell because they don't have a degree in "personal hygiene?" Here's some news: they smell because they don't have a home to take a shower in. They don't have a home because they don't have a job. And they don't have a job because asshats like this guy have been running things for decades.

15. They already are.
Public housing projects and prisons are just two slightly different methods that conservatives use to keep poor black people out of sight and out of mind. At least the people in prison are guaranteed a meal and some level of health care.

16. There you go. If Americans won't accept the slave wages you're offering,
lock them up and *make them* accept it.

This is real conservatism right here. This is what it really boils down to.

18. That's pretty much what Britain used to do in the 19th century.
'The workhouse', basically a punishment for poverty.

Some right-wingers obviously think that the Victorian abuses, recorded by such as Dickens, are a model to imitate.
