Poll question: Are you in favor of the Cordoba Initiative building a Community Center in Lower Manhattan?
Edited on Sun Aug-22-10 05:52 PM by Dennis Donovan
I thought it was a gimme that Progressives would find the Right's rabid opposition to the Muslim Community Center being built 2 blocks (and completely out of sight) of the former WTC site abhorrent. After I posted this, I'm not so sure.

With that in mind, are you in favor of the Cordoba Initiative building a Community Center in Lower Manhattan near the former WTC site?

10. text of First Amendment
Edited on Sun Aug-22-10 05:06 PM by steve2470
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution#Text

Of course, in this country anyone can say many things about Park51. However, part of the FA includes the Muslims' right to build Park51. Their FA right to religious freedom is just as important as anyone's FA right to freedom of speech.

I agree to disagree with all of its opponents. The religion of Islam did not cause 9-11.

6. If the objectors cared 1/10th as much for the 9/11 site
as they care about this "mosque" then we would have a magnificent memorial already built and in place at the site of the WTC. We might also be caring for the workers and families affected by the attack and cleanup.

I would love to return the focus to real issues like jobs and our extremely costly occupation of foreign lands.

The question is, "Are you opposed to it?"

Your choices are backwards, or you need to rewrite your question.

And the choices don't seen to align with the question either.

In addition, if you're going to word the choices this way you should include an option that they have a right to build there but should choose not to out of respect for those offended.

I understand peoples' reaction but they need to let go the reflex and try to have peace.

I wasn't sure how to feel about it (I'm an atheist & all I care about is environmental stuff) but then I listened to Interfaith Voices on NPR while ago and the speech the host gave at the end was so frickin touching. The show was really good, I recommend listening online! http://interfaithradio.org/

right. i am in favor of them being able to without condemnation. in favor of a mosque? meh, who cares.

but i am strongly opposed to people being bigots toward anyone. i am totally opposed to loss fo rights. i am totally opposed to hate being used as a political weapon. i am totally opposed to using the deaths to excalate fear and hate

and it's destroying our economy.

Obama waded into this to distract the country from the progressive policies he is not enacting, it's a sad ruse.

all Catholic churches away from elementary schools. The actions of a few apparently taint entire religions in the minds of some.

37. I think every business in lower Manhattan should be renamed
to include the words "Ground Zero".

Ground Zero Deli
Ground Zero Bakery
Ground Zero Tool and Die
Ground Zero Trucking
Ground Zero Gentlemen's Club
Ground Zero Dry Cleaners
Ground Zero Coney Island
Ground Zero Pawn Shop
Ground Zero Tattoos
Ground Zero Day Care

Just to de-sensitize the name.

39. Pretty axiomatic that you can't fight religioius intolerance ...
with religious intolerance. D? U? H?

This whole thing is a nasty slap in the face to the very Muslims whom we agree with most -- those who came here to build a life because they value the freedom and tolerance we claim to espouse.

Shameful.

40. Other: I don't favor the current size of the project
My only issue with the project is the size/scope of it - 13 stories, $100 million. They claim to want to serve the local Muslim community, but they will not be able to obtain the majority of the funds needed from the local Muslim community. There is no way this project can be built without soliciting large donations from people with very deep pockets (which will necessarily influence the culture of the community center), e.g. the House of Saud, the Mullahs of Iran, and other groups & governments whose beliefs and goals are directly at odds with the values established in our Constitution.

I would support a community center that's more in line with the needs of the local community - 2 or 3 stories, $10 - $15 million.

42. I am for it, my girlfriend is against it
my mother and her boyfriend are against it as well. We all live in Manhattan as well.

I've discovered it to be a strictly emotional issue, and my logical arguments for it don't move the needle much. It's tough, my gf actually cried while we discussed it so I don't bring it up anymore.

She was in Manhattan during 9/11 and is still traumatized. My mom and her bf identify strongly with Israel and the Jewish religion. I think that plays a big part in their opposition to the mosque.
