Man Accused Of Racially Charged Bus Attack

MADERA, Calif. (AP) ― Authorities say a transient attacked an elderly man on a charter bus headed to a Madera County casino while using racial slurs.

The 56-year-old suspect was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of assault, and authorities say he may face hate crime charges as well.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Edward Greene says the bus was heading from Modesto to the Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino when some passengers started collecting a tip for the driver. Greene says the suspect got angry when a 76-year-old man who spoke Spanish didn't contribute.

Witnesses say the suspect assaulted the man four separate times, shoving and punching him.

The attacks occurred after passengers began collecting a tip for the driver, Greene said. The assailant apparently became angry when he saw that a 76-year-old man who speaks only Spanish did not contribute money for the tip and shoved him. He returned to his seat but got up and assaulted the older man four separate times, striking him with a closed fist, Greene said.

The suspect used racial slurs during the attacks, Greene said.

CHP units began to follow the bus, pulled it over on Lucky Lane near the casino and took the assailant into custody.

The man did not have a gun, but did have a knife, Greene said.
