Recs and unrecs don't mean anything, the number of replies is the final arbiter of the quality and relevance of an OP..

Just look at the first page of GD right now, clearly the heaviest replying is happening on the highest quality and most meaningful OPs.

Right?

3. I always thought it was the subject line and all the text typed in the message boxes
But perhaps I don't have a clear understanding of "most important and meaningful"...

5. The weightiest subjects, those with the most impact on your life..
And the lives of your loved ones..

Things like war and peace, taxes and benefits, unemployment and jobs, health care and medical insurance.

4. Generally, this is right. But sometimes I have to question
the quality and relevance of some of the posts with flames. Some things just seem to be the most controversial, but not really that important. I am thinking about whether toilet seats are up or down as an example.

But for the record, I pay more attention to number of replies than I do recs.

7. That's my general thought as well.
The number of recs a thread has has little or no bearing on its value.

8. Sometimes the stupidest of OPs gets the most comments...
Condescension and the opportunity for same seems to bring 'em out of the woodwork... or the mattress.

10. I'd love to have a few screen shots of GD from the week that Michael Jackson died.
I spent so much time trying to keep up with hiding all MJ threads I hardly had any time left to actually read anything useful.

Meta-threads about DU and threads where people can work up a good froth of self-righteousness tend to gather the most replies.

11. My OP was largely ironic in nature..
Prompted by a thread I was involved in yesterday I think where someone said exactly what I did in my OP but they said it in all seriousness.

Indeed I used the MJ example myself on that thread, that week was truly bizarre here on DU.

12. Yes, I understood that you were being ironic. I just wanted to support the point you were making.
Not very skillfully, I guess. :P

I was probably on the same thread from yesterday that you were -- I know I posted on at least 3 or 4 of yesterday's unrec debate threads.

Anyway, your point is well taken by me, at least.
