"How far should the Islamic Center be from ground zero?"
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 11:37 PM by kentuck
Chris Mathews asked one of his guests tonight?

The guy could not answer. He did not know how far it should be other than that they should be out of sight of ground zero.

Such an important question.

Maybe it should be closer? Maybe it should be further away? Maybe it should stay where it is? Maybe it shouldn't even matter?

Sherry Wolf said if investment houses could build on that hallowed ground, then she sees no problem with an Islamic Center there either.

Interesting conversation.

1. And anyone who believes there is a specific distance needs to define it in "cubits". . .

2. How far?
Let's see. First, since it's NOT A MOSQUE, freedom of religion cannot be the issue. Since the building is NOT A MOSQUE. Unless, of course, it is a mosque, in which case all religious freedom protections apply.

However, if the building is NOT A MOSQUE, then the distance from Ground Zero should be no further than the last incidence of nauseated gagging at a building dedicated to the wonderfulness of Islamic culture located near the site of the 9/11 massacre.

I hope this helps.

13. It doesn't have to be a mosque, church, temple, or synagogue to have religious protection
Nor does it have to be religious center to have free assembly rights on private property.

Thank you for your attention, you may resume your regularly scheduled Crusade at this time.

15. I think we should too. Then we can test the theory of religious freedom.
If we don't care about the sensibilities of the 9/11 families we might as well make it a hugely grand gesture to prove we can have a full on mosque on ground zero.

9. If Muslims can pray and have services in the Pentagon chapel...
then the sacred Burlington Coast Factory building is an acceptable distance from ground zero.

14. As far away as Beck should be from site of MLK's speech
Mosque/community center is to Ground Zero

as

Beck's Restoring Honor (HA!) Rally is to site of "I Have A Dream" speech.

Both are intended to thumb a nose at groups of people who deserve more respect and sensitivity.

You can't support one without supporting the other, because they're both identical in disrespect. So if you don't like Beck and the douchebaggers on the site of MLK's speech, then you should be against the mosque/community center. Otherwise, you're just being hypocritical.

Because NYC is a big enough place with enough mosques to service its Muslim population. This isn't about religion. It's about hiding behind religion to push an agenda down people's throats...much like the insane fundie Christians have been doing for years.

Why stop there? Let's build a McDonald's right on the rubble where the Twin Towers used to be.

There needs to be a monument honoring the dead at Ground Zero. If the Muslims behind the community center were serious about helping NYC heal, they would be pushing for that, instead.
