What Exactly is a Relationship ? for babydollhead

In response and and with thanks for babydollhead's post "we must love one another or die". Thank you. The thought must be the order of the day.


How complex is your life? Is your life jammed with stuff? Things to do? Places to go? Possessions to care for? Is the clutter of culture filling every corner of your life?


I finally joined Facebook. I fought it for a long time and then, when one of my friends went out of the country, it was the only way to keep up with her travels.

Now I can keep up with what my friends and family are doing. And what a diverse group they are. Trips to Italy, Amsterdam, France, Burning Man. Fans of Lady Ga Ga, Reggie Watts, tarot, drum circles and random acts of kindness. They love their dogs, cats, friends and children. They are farmers and city folk, vintners and nurses, counselors, booksellers and gardeners.

And now I can keep up with everything that my friends are doing and I never have to take the time to see them in person.

Wait… what did I just say? I don’t have to have face to face time with my friends to have a continuing relationship with them. Hmmmm…

Something off in that. Our relationships, the most important thing in our lives and we can now relegate them to slogans and soundbites. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m having a good time being able to see what wonderful active lives we lead. But are we really getting so caught up in the stuff of our lives that in our busy – ness we are dropping our relationships?

Friday evening was the first time this summer that we invited a couple of our girls, their spouses and children over to sit out on the patio, around the fire and talk. It was absolutely wonderful. We relaxed, talked, laughed, giggled, and joked. We had no where else we had to go and nothing else we had to do. We spent several hours at this endeavor.

After everyone left and it was quiet once again, feeling fine, I basked in the glow of the time we spent together.
