all the peoples started out here -- and from here crossed the land bridge into Asia and thence onward to populate the other places.

All those colors of people would one day return to Turtle Island, it was said, and everything would be just fine -- if they returned without arrogance, and with a willingness to respect the traditions that remained rooted on Turtle Island (North America).

PufPuf is an immortal in the Karuk stories of creation and is the name of the Pacific Giant Salamander in Karuk (now considered language isolate or proto-Hokan). There were Athabascan and Alogoquin speakers (Hupa and Yurok) that came later that migrated from the east and moved into Karuk territory and adopted Karuk material culture and religion.

In Karuk lore PufPuf made the water pure and was good luck; now watershed scientists consider the Pacific Giant Salamander an indicator species of pure water and watershed health.
