Al Sharpton on the Whitewashing of Dr. King's legacy

On August 28... 47 years to the day since Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial, FOX News personality Glenn Beck is holding a rally at the same spot.

Beck insists that his "Restoring Honor" rally, for which Sarah Palin will be a featured speaker, is not political, but will focus on the country's "values" and pay tribute to military families

On the same day, the Reverend Al Sharpton's National Action Network is holding its own "Reclaim the Dream" rally and march in Washington, starting at a local high school and culminating in a trek to the site of the King memorial on the National Mall

I wonder if the troops ever tired of being used by the rabid rightwing nutjobs as a cover for their own cowardice?

Just thought I'd post about the other march, which doesn't seem to be getting any attention at all.

Even the left falls for the antics of the bought and paid for attention seeking clowns on the right. The media is not the only culprit.

Anyhow, in case anyone is interested, Beck is not the only one holding a rally today.

SHARPTON: What I think people should do is read Dr. King's speech. They quote "I Have a Dream," but read the speech. He said we came because America has given the Black man -- or the Negro, he said at that time -- a check that has bounced in the bank of justice marked "Insufficient Funds." He talked about having fairness and equality. If anyone reads that speech they cannot say that what Beck and them are talking about is consistent with what Dr. King said. We can have our own views and opinions of Dr. King, and share them with the world. Beck has the right to hold his march, and I don't object to that. But we can't have our own facts.

ESSENCE.com: Beck has said it will not be political, but about "reclaiming values." What do you think are the chances that this will actually be a non-partisan event?

SHARPTON: He's got politicians speaking like Sarah Palin. Their ideas of "values" is sometimes political. But if they're having a values march and not dealing with the civil rights and equal rights of American people, then they're not doing anything like what Dr. King did. You cannot take an anniversary of a civil rights march and turn it into what you want, and act like you're consistent because somebody was a minister.

Sharpton is right when he says that the Dream has not been realized yet.

And Beck's mockery of the dream and his own well-documented bigotry is proof of that.

Beck = Exhibit A as a symbol of all that is wrong with this country.

were the era when MLK was risking his life for Civil Rights, these teabaggers would have been on the wrong side, in fact I bet many of the older ones probably were.

3. The Right are like temper throwing children. The know how

get attention from inept parents.

The Teabaggers were stung by the allegations of bigotry and Beck, after making his bigoted remark about President Obama was rightfully criticized for promoting bigotry.

The whole Shirley Sherrod debacle by Breitbart & Co backfired on them as a response to the NAACP's exposure of their shameful bigotry.

So now, in true Rovian fashion, they grab the spotlight by mocking the Civil Rights movement.

There is no doubt in my mind that this phony, paid for 'march' is nothing more than an attempt to get back at those who exposed them for what they are.
