2. CBC and BBC "tens of thousands," Fox claims "thousands"
So I'd assume something in the low to middle five digit range.

showed an ariel shot of a BIG, BIG crowd. If you are correct, (and I believe you over CNN), then CNN showed shots from a previous gathering. What rotten bastards.

17. I know what image you are talking about
and 10K could look that big. I think the big indicator is... the Fox report of only thousands. They know they didn't get the presence they wanted.

Mind you... thousands could be interpreted from 2K to 100K...

And I wasn't there, but I just went through photos posted in the google... and it looks like best case 10K... that is... in the thousands... and good news.

30. So where are all the millions of people who love Sarah Palin?
You'd think the Teabagger Queen would turn out at least 500,000 if she is so popular and loved. What a wash out this rally was. Promoted for months and months and lots of free press on the msm. It's a joke.

34. The Jacobs method of crowd size estimation:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28662672/
After gathering data on numerous demonstrations, Jacobs came up with some rules of thumb that still are used today by those serious about crowd estimation. A loose crowd, one where each person is an arm's length from the body of his or her nearest neighbors, needs 10 square feet per person. A more tightly packed crowd fills 4.5 square feet per person. A truly scary mob of mosh-pit density would get about 2.5 square feet per person.

The trick, then, is to accurately measure the square feet in the total area occupied by the crowd and divide it by the appropriate figure, depending on assessment of crowd density. Thanks to aerial photos or mapping applications like Google Earth, even outdoor areas can be readily measured these days.

If you know the total square footage of the areas surrounding the Reflection pool in the photo, you should be able to make a reasonable guess. I would probably use about 8 or 9 as the divisor in the above equation, with several green areas visible within the crowd in the picture.

Or, if you trust the National Park Service estimate 0f 400,000 for the 'Million Man March' in 1995, the area of the below photo represents about the same area as in the pic in the OP (the distance from Capitol to Washington Monument being the same as from Washington Monument to Lincoln Memorial). Al Sharpton threatened to sue over the estimate, which resulted in the Park Service ending the practice of guessing crowd sizes.

1.9 from WM to Capitol
1.0 from WM to Lincoln Memorial

That's basically twice as much.

on edit: somne sources say one mile, some 1.9 miles. VERY CONFUSING!

# From the steps to the Washington Monument, the Mall spans 1.2 miles (1.8 km).

41. The numbers according to NBC , ABC and CBS
NBC via the NY Times: 300,000

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/29/us/politics/29beck.html

Officials do not make crowd estimates because they are unreliable and can be controversial, but event organizers put the number of attendees at 500,000; NBC News said it was closer to 300,000, but by any measure it was a large turnout.

Via ABC News: "Hundreds of Thousands"

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/glenn-becks-restoring-honor-rally-draws-hundreds-thousands/story?id=11504349

Restoring Honor Rally at Sight of MLK's 'I Have a Dream' Speech Draws Hundreds of Thousands of People

Via CBS: 87,000

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20014986-503544.html?tag=cbsContent;cbsCarousel

Approximately 87,000 people attended the rally, according to a crowd estimate commissioned by CBS News. The estimate was made using aerial photos taken at noon, which was judged to be the height of the event. The estimate has a margin of error of 9,000 people.

45. I guessed 50-100k myself..
It was a large turnout for them, but I doubt if it was more than 100k.

And of course any number their organizers throw out will be inflated by around 10 fold. They claim 500k-1 million, so divide by 10 and you probably have an accurate figure. CBS may have it right at around 85k.

48. NYT stated that the "organizers" of the rally say 500,000...NYT iteslf
says 10's of thousands. I have seen everything from
"thousands" to "a million" (Bachmann),
so I doubt there will be any real numbers...media will probably go with the most inflated number - they seem to be eating Becks shit up.
