Beck Crowd Size Disputed (yahoo.com and nearly 12,000 comments posted so far!)

Maybe I don't get around the internets much but I thought it was impressive that a yahoo.com news story about disputes on beck's size (sic) already has nearly 12,000 posted comments. A single page of comments when I last looked, at 11,417 comments, only covered less than the last 10 seconds! I posted a comment but then couldn't find my own right away.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100830/cm_yblog_upshot/glenn-beck-rally-sparks-debate-over-crowd-size

There's a funny left/right battle going on with Beck taking a lot of hits and longer-winded Beckheads saying their piece.

Check it out and if you think it's worthwhile, please kick this post so others can see. If not, let it drop like a rock! Thank you. :)

1. I think we should post everywhere that we agree....
it was Beck and more than 300,000 (or a million--who cares) of his MORMON friends... ;)

So many BeckHeads apparently do not know that he is Mormon and are nearly as "fearful" of Mormonism as they are Islam, I think we should capitalize on this....

2. in the long run, though...
probably playing one religion off against the other plays into the hands of at least Beck's non-Mormon supporters who will amplify that in things like mosque issues.

7. No playing one religion off another...
We would be what they will not. NON-judgmental regarding his Mormonism, as it should be.

9. Yep...
No sense in becoming what we hate.

Personally, I think his Mormonism is his best trait... keeping in mind that they spent millions to shout up Prop H8.

3. Most of about 80,000 were Mormons. The other 220k were mostly invisible
as evident by the amount of grass seen in the photos.

4. Yes, of course, but that isn't the point...
Throw 'em a bone (and a major curve) at the same time...

5. That's still the most zero's
I've seen congregated in one spot.

Seriously, I'd be curious what the average IQ was in that idiot's assembly.

6. I looked at the ariel photos and estimated 70k tops
It was pretty easy to make an educated guess. I compared the size of the reflecting pool to the crowd to give me square footage and then simply divided by 10 square feet per person to average out the dense crowd near the Monument and the sparse number farther away. It came out to about 70,000 people, but even if I had made it a very cramped 5 square feet per person it would only have been twice that number of people.

8. Our local newspaper which is consider liberal by some had a WP article
that was not the original. They had the throngs shoulder to shoulder. It was quite obvious that they were no where near being shoulder to shoulder. They were probably at least 5 feet apart when standing and many of them were sitting either on the ground or in their lawn chairs.

Someone should had told them that dogs are allowed in the mall when there aren't any gatherings. And that the park does not clean up that stuff. :eyes:

Also tell them that weed killer and fertilizer was applied the day before. :eyes:

11. That's what I did, with about the same results
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=9034279&mesg_id=9038223

Although a few sources have said that there were indeed "throngs" of people under the trees (why??), and that there were considerably more between the WWll memorial and Washington Monument. The only clear shot I have seen facing the Washington Monument shows a fairly sparse crowd occupying about one additional Reflector Pool (1,016,529 sq. ft.) in area. I'd have to give the 87,000 estimate from CBS's source credit for probably the closest guess, although the mysterious tree-Beckers may put it just over 100,000.

12. Well, at least we know what "miracle" occurred that day.
Just like the Bible story of Jesus feeding 5,000 people with 5 loaves of bread and two fish with 12 baskets of bread left over, the right-wing media is able to turn a crowd of less than 100,000 into a million person throng that spilled out into the streets of D.C.

I wonder if they are including their guardian angels in the head count, that would explain blatantly overreaching crowd counts.

13. Yes, is there a bullet point list of miracles that happened there?

14. The question is, how many loaves and fishes did it take for Beck to feed the crowd?
If we knew that we could calculate the size of the crowd. I believe Jesus fed 5000 with 5 loaves and 2 fishes. But I could be misremembering.
