8. Sorry to disappoint but I left on Thursday, returned late Sun. afternoon.
Nice trip and I loved being there when the Obamas were but we were all bummed by not seeing them (which is kinda silly since they were in Chilmark, mid island).

Had great oysters, sun, beach and ambiance...got a nice private tour from my son in law on Chappy (the party house, wrong turn, bridge, etc). It's still all dirt roads, wouldja believe?

It ain't just this country..

Far-right protesters clash with police in UK

(AP) – 2 days ago

LONDON — A right-wing group that opposes what it calls the spread of Islam in Britain clashed with riot police in northern England on Saturday, throwing bottles, rocks and a smoke bomb at authorities. The demonstration by the English Defense League occurred in Bradford, a city with one of the country's largest Pakistani and Muslim communities.

The clashes began as the police kept about 700 English Defense League protesters apart from a leftist group that had called a counter-demonstration nearby. One English Defense League protester was taken away with a leg injury and five people were arrested, police said.

Bradford saw some of the U.K.'s worst riots in 2001, when racial tension between whites and South Asian immigrants resulted in looting, arson, and attacks on immigrant-owned businesses. More than 180 people were charged with rioting in that incident.

The city had braced for similar unrest Saturday because the English Defense League had predicted that thousands of its supporters would descend on the city.

But riot police, some riding horses, outnumbered the activists, penning them in with barricades to keep them away from the counter-demonstration by United Against Fascism.

The two opposing groups had clashed during similar rallies last year in northern English cities such as Leeds and Manchester.

The English Defense League, which insists it is a peaceful organization, opposes what it calls the spread of Islam, Sharia law and Islamic extremism in England.

Its opponents say the group is racist and stages violent protests.

in Wisconsin. We inherited his home in Door County along with his sister. It's great German country...brats and beer...esp. beer.

We missed our annual visit to Door County this year due to my husband's back surgery but will be back next year.

Hubby grew up in Sheboygan, went to UW Milwaukee. Lotsa beer...

10. Err, Germany has a right wing government...
The UK has a new right wing government. France's existing right wing government is as crazy as ever. The Swiss are busy banning Minarets. "Austerity" programs are being put in place throughout Europe.

Things are simply no better in Europe than they are here. In fact, things may be worse over there.

The grass is always greener.

Plus, they train their people in the trades or the university. They know to have a healthy and a well educated/trained workforce. DUH!!

Why do we even wonder that they are more advanced than we are...dear god...

31. In Europe, there is still a difference between "conservative" and "right wing."
The governments of Germany are slightly conservative, not right wing. The UK's conservatives only rule at the pleasure
of their coalition partners, the Liberal Democrats, who, with Howard Dean's help, made such a great showing that none
of the mainstream parties managed enough votes to govern on their own.

Things are worse in a few of the western countries, especially Belgium, and Greece, where the socialists promised so
many benefits to get elected that it busted their budget to pay for them. However, I live most of the time in Germany,
am married to a German, and if I had to choose between living in L.A. or Düsseldorf, I'd take the Rheinland any day.

But to compare Merkel or Cameron to the bat-shit crazies of our Republican party is as inaccurate as it is unfair.

If you want an accurate comparison to our Republicans, look at Germany's "Die Republikaner" or their "NPD." Now
look at what kind of percentage of the vote "Die Republikaner" or the NPD get. They don't get 6% between them.
Look at what our "Republikaner" get. There's our problem.

33. Yes, I've had Europeans tell me that ALL of our politicians would be
considered conservatives in Europe, with the possible exception of outliers like Kucinich and Sanders, who would be considered centrists. We have NO ONE on the national scene who is as far left as the average European leftist.

34. There is no such thing as universal peace
because what it is varies from individual to individual. Because of this, the myth of universal peace can only be sustained through force, which negates its premise.

38. Hardly defeatist
It is so old because it is human nature and our "tech level" has nothing to do with peoples desire to think for themselves. One persons view of what is universal peace will always be opposed by another persons view of universal peace. Especially on the individual level.
If it wasn't, there would be no opposition to throwing away our Constitution and embracing a European style of government.

29. Tell me about that one!
My younger daughter just got her first job. She graduated from Law school in New York, honors, Magna cum Laude, Association of American Women Lawyers award, and could find NO work in her field (international law) in the USA. So, she applied to European firms (due to my German wife, my daughters are both dual nationals, German and American). She landed a job with the German office (Frankfurt/Main) of a British firm.

They offered her: 95000 EUROS starting salary, full German health coverage (of course) and SIX WEEKS paid vacation, which they MAKE THEIR EMPLOYEES TAKE so that they don't burn out from stress. Her boss has already told her to be prepared to travel to Dublin, New York and St. Petersburg in her first 2 months on the job. She starts in 2 weeks.

Now, in Germany, 95000 Euros is already at the 50% tax bracket or so, and the cost of living is not cheap in Frankfurt.

BUT--it sure beats waiting on tables in Manhattan "hoping for something to come along." Her older sister works in Manhattan for slave wages and is green with envy at the vacation time and the benefits (she's philosophical about the salary--in her field, it "is what it is").

42. Don't forget--she grew up there, after all, didn't leave until she was 16
Germany is home turf to her--but then, in the meantime, so is Africa, Hawai'i, Washington DC and New York.

At least her boyfriend is happy. He is German and has no work permit for the USA. She has him well-trained,
too. When she found her job was going to be in Frankfurt, she told him to get a job in Frankfurt (he is from
Düsseldorf), which, of course, being both an obedient boyfriend as well as no fool, he did. They rented a place
and moved in about ten days ago.

Pretty wunderbar, all the same--where the hell were all these opportunities when I was in MY early twenties?
