Doctors 'close to cure for baldness'

Down the centuries, bald men have resorted to a range of desperate measures to restore their lost hair. Today, however, the first real hope of effective treatments is reported by an American team arising from research that could also lead to scar free surgery.

A hairless mouse and one which has had its hair regenerated
Evidence shows mice can regenerate hair follicles

The scientists made the advance after identifying a mechanism that relies on reawakening dormant genes. A US company, Follica Inc, has now licensed the technology in the hope of developing new treatments for baldness.

But I gotta tell you... If I could get treatment that would grow the hair back on the top of my head, I'd do it in a second. Vanity? For sure.

36. Heard the report on NPR
The hair grows as a result of a wound that needs to be large and remain open for a long time thus, at this stage it cannot be transformed. However, if the mechanism can be decipher then, perhaps it can be broken down to the critical steps and perhaps be used in humans.
