Coming to America and living a dream

Even now Mohamad Jaffer marvels that he owns an Apple laptop. Until he was 13, he never owned a pair of shoes, or even a change of clothes.

But since coming to America in 2004, Jaffer has acquired many things that a Somali orphan living on the streets of Kenya could only dream of — a bed, a television, even his own car.

On Friday, the 19-year-old Santa Rosa Junior College student got something to beat them all — his U.S. citizenship.

Jaffer was one of 25 immigrants who took the oath of citizenship at a special ceremony on Angel Island commemorating Citizenship Day and Constitution Week, and the 100th anniversary of the opening of the island's immigration station.

This event, held in honor of Citizenship Day and commemorating the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, was held on Angel Island to also mark the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Immigration Station there.
