National Geographic: Gulf Spill--Forlorn in the Bayou
<snip>
One-third of the United States oyster and shrimp crop comes out of the waters along the Louisiana coast. And 98 percent of the fish, shrimps, crabs, and oysters harvested along that coast depend on habitat in and around the marshes of the Barataria-Terrebonne estuary, an area that encompasses some four million acres south and west of New Orleans. Without these marshes, bordered by the Atchafalaya River on the west and the Mississippi on the east, there is no shrimp fishery or oyster harvest; neither are there reeds and grasses for nesting and migrating birds. Without the marshes, the rich human culture of the bayou has no foundation.

<snip>

"The ecological effects of this will gradually subside. But the socioeconomic impacts will be devastating. No oysters, at least in the near future. No crabbing. No fishing. No seafood to restaurants. Nobody buying ice or bait or marine supplies. Lost paychecks with the offshore-drilling moratorium. Those impacts will stay for a long time."

1. I just wanted to applaud your tenacity in keeping this crime front and center.
The limited attention span of far too many people has allowed this to fade beneath the continued onslaught of BP TV spots.

You've been providing a lot of relevant posts that show that (surprise??), BP and even some officials have been lying in order to make things seem much better than they really are.

I guess that those magical and wondrous bacteria weren't the all mighty and powerful panacea that they were made out to be.

:thumbsup:

2. The more BP tells us how great of a job they are doing the more suspicious I get
They sound like "heckuva job" brownie patting themselves on the back over how well they've buried the oil spill story.

6. Bush, Katrina. Obama, Gulf.
If one is to blame, then is not the other?

If this had occurred under bush there would be people here calling for his impeachment and telling us he let it happen or lied to protect the oil companies.

As mom used to say "What is good for the Goose is good for the Gander"

Politics is a funny business - when people are for one team they cheer them on no matter what, and when against another team they boo them and yell out about how they are cheaters and such.

All the while the owners of the team are laughing all the way to the bank.
