While defending Colbert, Stewart slams Tucker Carlson as 'arrogant douche'

Expect to feel the wrath of Jon Stewart if you trash one of his fellow Comedy Central hosts.

Many pundits and politicians -- most of them conservative -- criticized Stephen Colbert for testifying in character Friday before a House immigration subcommittee after being invited by Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). Stewart came to Colbert's defense Monday.

Lofgren asked Colbert to tell the subcommittee about his experience working for a day in a job typically done by undocumented workers.

Following the hearing, Republicans pounced on Democrats for allowing the testimony.

"It's a serious issue," said Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT). "This is a broken system and they call in Colbert as the first guy?"

"I think it's an insult to the time and an insult to the intelligence of the American people that Congress is conducting themselves in this fashion," grumbled Steve King (R-IA).

Even some Democrats complained. "I think it was an embarrassment to Mr. Colbert more than the House," said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD).

But one conservative pundit got Stewart's attention. "Any comic who says I'm here to speak for people that have no voice is no longer a comic but a pompous jerk," Tucker Carlson said on Fox News the evening following Colbert's testimony.

"Yes, pompous jerk as opposed to an arrogant douche who apparently gets to decide who is and is not a comic," Stewart shot back.

Stewart's dislike for Carlson was first apparent when he appeared on CNN's Crossfire in 2004. Ars Technica noted:

Yesterday Stewart made his case not on the Daily Show, but instead on CNN's Crossfire (transcript here | streaming video here). Crossfire is a partisan show that pits two sides against each other. Stewart came on the show, and it's rather clear that Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala were expecting a jovial Stewart to trade barbs with them, but that's not what happened. From the beginning of the discussion, Stewart took aim at Crossfire and other media shows, saying (at first with a smile) that they "hurt America" by making politicians' lives easier by failing to "hold their feet to the fire." The gist of Stewart's complaint was that shows that were purportedly "hard" and "cutting" were really only theatrical performances of talking points and sensationalism—an accusation made eerily true when Carlson tried to ask an irrelevant and stupid question about Bill O'Reilly's current sex scandal. Carlson's rejoinder amounted to nothing more than asking why Stewart himself didn't ask the likes of John Kerry tougher questions, at which point Stewart noted, "If you want to compare your show to a comedy show, you're more than welcome to."

"Tucker and I can talk like this because we already have a visceral negative reaction to each other. Not an ounce of friendship or respect between us. Truly one of the only people in the world I feel that way about," explained Stewart Monday.

1. He has that effect on me too, Mr. Stewart

In fact, I mentioned the little bow-tied prick in an unrelated post here just today. 'Arrogant douche' pretty well sums it up for me too.

3. A daddy in broadcasting, a mommy who's heiress to the Swanson foods fortune
Put it all together and you get the arrogant little rich kid fuck who should have had his ass kicked every single day in high school but somehow avoided it. I went to school with guys like Carlson...16 year olds who tore into the parking lot in brand new 280 Zs that mommy and daddy bought. They just walked through the world 24/7 with a "kiss my ass" attitude.

Tucker Carlson is the elder son of Richard Warner Carlson, a former Los Angeles news anchor and U.S. ambassador to the Seychelles who was president of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and director of Voice of America. His mother is Patricia Caroline Swanson (born 1945), former wife of Howard Feldman and an heiress to the Swanson food-conglomerate fortune.

2. I knew Jon Stewart had single handedly destroyed Crossfire
and for that he has earned my undying respect.

But now that I know he truly despises Rollo the Rich Kid, I may build a shrine to him in my garage.

4. The end bit of the clip was even better than the "douche" remark
"Tucker and I can talk like this because we already have a visceral negative reaction to each other. Not an ounce of friendship or respect between us. Truly one of the only people in the world I feel that way about"...

...because he's making no mistake about the fact that his comments are real. And Carlson knows that no matter what frat boy snark he offers in response, he's been called out.

8. wow. just wow.
I won't take a WASP over a Jew or vice versa merely based on that, because I don't judge people based on their ethnicity or religious background. I'll treat them as individuals. Of course, Tucker Carlson IS a douche, but that's not because he's a WASP, assuming he is. Bill Kristol is a douche, too. And he's a Jew. Doucheness and mental acuity is not determined by religion.

9. hang around with jewish guys
and you may see what I see. I grew up in a Jewish clique and wordplay is part of their culture. Look at Groucho Marx to Woody Allen to Mel Brooks to Carl Reiner to John Stewart. It's no accident and to deny it is foolish. It has nothing to do with intelligence but it does have to do with culture.

10. Why do you assume I don't
Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 07:39 PM by merqz
Hang around with Jewish guys, or that I am not a Jewish guy (or gal) myself?

Regardless, I won't make that leap. Furthermore, anecdotal examples don't prove your point. They could just be indicative of a fatter tail, or other factors at work. Would you say "I'll take the man over the woman any day" based on media examples of disproportionality? Would you say "I'll take the Jew over the Muslim any day?" or "I'll take the Catholic over the Jew any day?" Or is it ok to denigrate WASPs because like they are white, and presumably wealthier than the average bear?

11. I don't think you are jewish or hang around them much
Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 08:06 PM by wilt the stilt
just my take. I am still in contact with all the jewish guys I went to high school with 40 years ago in Yonkers, NY. To this day we trade emails multiple times a week. The put downs are constant. I just think it is part of NY Jewish culture. That is why guys like Stewart are so cutting. As a matter of fact there is quite a bit written about the Borscht Belt and how it was almost vulgar.

16. well aware of NY Jewish culture. some of my closest relatives are NY Jews
Edited on Wed Sep-29-10 12:24 AM by merqz
I'm a damn new englander myself, and i think the yankees suck. I am Jewish by both birth AND choice, to borrow a phrase. I am well aware of the cultural references you are making. I still think it's pretty amazing that you made the statement you did. I can think of numerous other statements about race, ethnicity, and religion, that while they may be true in aggregate or statistically are considered racist because you shouldn't apply them to an INDIVIDUAL.

example: you would take a random X (insert race , religion, or ethnicity) over Y (ditto) when it comes to Z (practice, sociopathology, sports skill, etc.). fill in the blanks with the stereotype of choice. And remember, some stereotypes are true WHEN APPLIED TO THE AGGREGATE - it's applying them to an individual that's generally considered much more bigoted, although again when it's a positive attributed to a minority, it often gets a pass.

In our society, it is generally more acceptable though, when it's a positive trait, attributed to a minorty. such as you did. or a negative trait attributed to the majority. but when it's the converse. WATCH OUT.

17. By the way I wouldn't be too proud of Boston
Edited on Wed Sep-29-10 07:05 AM by wilt the stilt
Last team to integrate(Red Sox) and Boston really never embraced the Celtics until Bird became a player. It was always easy to get a ticket when Russell played and I do remmeber because I grew up in that era and even watched the famous Havlicek steal live on TV.

Just stating an observation and a culture to admire. Cuomo said some interesting things about the GI bill in '45. He said that the Jews were ready and the Italians weren't and that the Jews went to college in droves. Secondly, an interesting fact in the 1930's 50% of the world boxing champs were Jewish. Finally, more Nobel prize winners than any other culture. A culture who embraces education and accomplishments.
