U.S. government medical researchers intentionally infected hundreds of people in Guatemala, including institutionalized mental patients, with gonorrhea and syphilis without their knowledge or permission more than 60 years ago.

On Friday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius offered extensive apologies for actions taken by the U.S. Public Health Service.

"The sexually transmitted disease inoculation study conducted from 1946-1948 in Guatemala was clearly unethical," according to the joint statement from Clinton and Sebelius. "Although these events occurred more than 64 years ago, we are outraged that such reprehensible research could have occurred under the guise of public health. We deeply regret that it happened, and we apologize to all the individuals who were affected by such abhorrent research practices."

by our CIA and The United Fruit Company (Chiquita Bananas). United Fruit was known as The Octopus and was based out of Boston, MA. Director of the CIA Dulles was on the Board of UFC in the early days. This was all about using the CIA and our Marines to control whole countries in Central/South America so we could have some lovely bananas and control of the region. Among other thing we (UFC) took over their schools, their post office department, their communication systems, their public transportation system and god knows what else. UFC was then what Halliburton and KBR is now - CIA eyes on the ground.

One of the networks should do a 20 hour special over 5 nights on Chiquita Bananas. U.S. citizens would be shocked and outraged at our behavior.

Am I supposed to believe ethical considerations would stop the CIA from spreading any disease whatsoever in any population it chose--including ours? We still don't know who was behind the anthrax letters in 2001, and the last suspect died under very mysterious circumstances--I seem to remember that it was a suicide. The details are fuzzy in my mind at the moment, but no doubt someone else remembers them more clearly than I do.
