1. I would not have accepted the apology

Because it would appear to me that such attitudes are very likely to be prevalent in the culture of the Senator's office. It's just that one particularly careless staffer let the cat out of the bag and made those sentiments public.

4. Probably as much as could be expected

But a truly pentitent person would make the apology in as public a fashion as the original offense. That is, if you are on national teevee and say something you later regret, the apology should ideally be on national teevee as well. In this case, the apology would carry a lot more weight and be far more meaningful posted on Mr. Chambliss' official website.

right thing for Chambliss to do. I do have one question regarding part of his response.

"There has been some talk about how long it's taking to find the person behind this, but we just wanted to be very careful and handed this off to the Senate Sergeant at Arms, because this is going to seriously impact somebody's life and we wanted to make sure we got this right."

So if they wanted to do the right thing because it would impact someones life, why aren't they training the people that work for them this small fact. You know - when speaking publicly please respect the people or groups you are speaking about because it may seriously impact their life. In other words I am sure they can understand this - If you can't say something nice then SHUT THE ____ UP!

He's still a Republican bigot who almost certainly supports the words and actions of his staff members, even if he can't say so publicly.
