Alan Grayson’s FL Republican Opponent Tied To “Biblical Stoning” Movement, AKA Christian Reconstructionism

So how close is Republican Congressional candidate Daniel Webster, running against Democratic Representative Alan Grayson for Florida’s 8th Congressional District, to evangelist Bill Gothard? That question is now politically salient because of Gothard’s participation in a radical Christian political movement called Christian Reconstructionism that seeks to impose stoning as a form of capital punishment for crimes including murder, adultery, “heresy,” and “witchcraft.” (for more on Christian Reconstructionism, see story appendix)

The answer to that question would be, very close. The first section of this story documents Daniel Webster’s relationship with Bill Gothard, so close that the religious leader could reasonably be described as a mentor or spiritual guru to the Republican congressional candidate. The second section describes Bill Gothard’s affinity for Christian Reconstructionist ideas.

4. Gee, looks like Grayson's "edited" clip was spot on after all
Maybe Taliban Dan wasn't addressing the proper audience for it, but he would clearly be comfortable telling women to submit to their husbands, or lacking same, submit to the nearest authoritarian male so they could be good and godly.

Also, I'm uninterested in any bleats from Taliban Dan sympathizers about stove-piping. After watching the endless spectacle of President Obama being called to account for everything Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers ever said or did, I think Taliban Dan has more than a few questions to answer about his association with the likes of Bill Gothard and any affinity he might have for the teachings of R.J. Rushdoony and the Institute for Biblical Law.

In fact, I double-dog dare Webster to make a public statement that he disavows in their entirety the philosophy of Gothard and Rushdoony.

5. he was saying it is up to women to pray that they submit - note he never denied anyting about submis
submission, webster only complained he was taken out of context. He never denied that he is a gothard followe either or that he has taken a leadership roll in gothard's organization or that he has traveled overseas with gothard to help spread his message. He could only honestly complain that Grayson had taken his quote out of context. I wish Grayson had not done that as now that is all the media - even Jon Stewart - is paying any attention to instead of the larger context of the full clip which was that it was that of course women's own duty to submit and pray that they submit well.

As you said all he has to do is say I do not believe women should submit to their husbands willingly or not but I doubt he will and right now I doubt if anyone in the msm will ask him.

As a February 16, 1997 story in the St. Petersburg Times described,

"Last summer, Daniel Webster journeyed to South Korea on a religious mission, meeting with the country's president and other political and spiritual leaders. He was joined by Bill Gothard, the head of a $30-million Christian evangelical group. Four months after the trip, Webster ascended to one of the most powerful positions in Florida: speaker of the state House of Representatives. He brings with him 14 years of experience with Gothard's Institute in Basic Life Principles, where Webster has not only attended seminars, but also taught classes and even made an instructional video that raised money for the institute."

As an August 5, 1996 article in the Gainesville Sun quoted Webster, 'I respect (Gothard) as much as anybody. As Webster told the Gainesville Sun, "I wouldn't have gone {with Gothard to Korea} but he wanted me there."

snip

Some critics have accused Gothard of employing exorcism which, in the following account, would seem, to function as a method for disciplining unruly wives. In her 2003 book Bonshea, by Coral Anika Theill, Theill describes undergoing the following therapeutic regimen at one of Bill Gothard's facilities:
