Toomey Calls Troop Bonuses "Wasteful"
Toomey Calls Troop Bonuses "Wasteful"

In what might be one of, if not the most underreported comments by a candidate in the 2010 races, Pennsylvania Senate candidate and former Congressman Pat Toomey in June let the truth slip out. During a press conference where he was challenged for his vote against a $1,500 combat bonus for troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, Toomey said he voted that way because paying troops who risk their lives for America is "wasteful" and undermined "fiscal irresponsibility."

Yeah, he actually said that.

"Now there are times when some of these measures are (used) as an excuse to undermine the fiscal stability of our country," Toomey said, according to PA2010.com, the only outlet to report the quote. "That's very bad policy. And we shouldn't hold military and veteran needs hostage to wasteful spending."

Excuse me? This from the same guy who stood against taxing any of the bonuses that Wall Street bankers took after ripping off Americans, and says he wants absolutely no taxes at all on big corporations?

I found this quote, while gathering articles on two literature pieces that veterans and military families are leaving at over 100,000 doors across the state. The pieces, sponsored by VoteVets.org, pull no punches. One, citing the vote against a combat troop bonus, clearly states, "Pat Toomey Supports Bonuses For Wall Street... But Not Our Troops. Wall Street Bankers Can Always Count On Pat Toomey. Sadly, Our Troops and Veterans Cannot."

4. Sestak had best better win here...

this loon Toomey is off-the-charts dangerous and stupid. If you added his and O'Donnell's IQ points, you'd still have a 2-digit number.\

7. I'm really afraid that he may just beat Sestak.
Toomey could make Rick Santorum seem quite reasonable.

5. My son-in-law his on his 4th trip overseas. I say this isn't nearly enough for his job.
This jerk should go over to Afghanistan and I don't mean for just a visit. Let him do the job that these soldiers are doing for a year at a time and then ask him again how he feels about these "bonuses". These bonuses help the wife and families pay for the things that they need to have done because they are things that they can't do and have to hire things done since their husbands aren't there to do them. In the case of our women soldiers it helps pay for child care and other things for their children back home. This guy needs to get a grip!

11. Michaz,I've been there...sending thoughts your way

my congressman was the same way...rah,rah-support the troops(Flag-waving!)..and ignore them when they return...or,hell...when they are at war-refusing to provide the equip they needed over there....let alone vet care.
I hope this is broadcast far and wide-let them know exactly how much they, the warhawks, support our troops.

6. Toomey presents himself as a family oriented small businessman who
Edited on Sat Oct-02-10 07:41 AM by old mark
happened to find himself in politics. He is a fucking shark, hates anything remotely progressive , refuses anything that supports workers or the middle class and obviously the low level military people who risked their lives in the wars he approved.
He is a multi millionaire wall street whore.
Sestak is pretty much tied with him as of the last few days.

The above info int he OP MUST be broadly publicised - Toomey must be exposed for what he really is, not what he wants to be seen as.

Yes, we do need to win this one.

Added; Thanks again - I posted the link on a pretty RW biased gun website for PA residents - I don't know how they will react, but maybe one or two will know the truth when they see it - most of them think I am a fan of Stalin and Mao, though...

12. Actually, he's not - Sestak is within a few points of Toomey and I have
little doubt Sestak will win IF we get Democrats out to vote.

That's very encouraging. I was getting gloomy about that race, but prematurely it seems.

16. Sestak came from behind to beat Specter in the primary - and Specter had
the support of the National Democratic Party and the White House as well as the PA State Democratis Party and Governor Ed Rendell. Sestak started slow, won every county in the state but 3. He -and we-WILL win this if we vote.

Also, Democrat Dan Onorato is nearly tied - and in several polls is ahead of republican Tom Corbett for PA Governor, which is vital to us, too. We thjink he will win this, too.

Again, it all depends on Democratic voters showing up.

NO ONE in the media believes we will win, and they have been telling the GOP they will coast to victory in November.

I'd really love to surprise them!!!;-)

17. Somewhat similar to the Senate situation here in Colorado
I'm not crazy about Bennett, but I certainly prefer him over the rightwing nutcase, Buck. I wish he were more like Sestak, but I'll take a come-from-behind victory by him, nonetheless.

10. Is this a commercial yet and if not
why not.

Great contrast Toomey was for Wall Street Bonuses but against Troop bonuses.

Simple and powerful and draws the distinction needed.

Come on Joe get this commercial out in heavy rotation NOW!

15. Exactly
Voters may tolerate 'support' for the troops that amounts only to lip service. But speaking out and voting AGAINST benefits the troops have earned? While SUPPORTING benefits for fat cats? That's very damaging, IF we can shine a spotlight on it and get the word out.
