I am watching a Canadian station showing the
damage to parts of the Bonavista Peninsula in Newfoundland as well as Labrador. When I look at Mexico and Jamaica I realize that most of the damage this year is water and it's unbelievable.

An elderly man just said that he has never seen anything that bad in his 56 years. Some communities are still cut off from others nine days after Hurricane Igor. We're talking over $100million here.

This has been one hell of a hurricane season

1. Oh wow. Maine hasn't had that kind of trouble. I think we're just tucked away enough to
escape the worst.

3. Igor was really bad. I feel so sorry for anyone who was in it's path.
But watch if you can, the video in the top right of this page ...... the village of Trouty's isolation is ended when a bridge is built in one day.

7. What kind of bridge is that - doesn't look like the Bailey Bridge
which our soldiers used up to two days ago.
The most noticeable part of the Newfoundland disaster is the way people have come together to help each another.

11. I don't know too much about bridges ....
"We've got a particular type of bridge called a medium girder bridge, which is assault bridging. It's not a pretty bridge but it will get across a gap and it will serve a function and get some vehicles across there," he said.

5. A guy I work with had to go home to repair his house...
Edited on Sat Oct-02-10 05:12 PM by SidDithers
He's got family in Marystown, which is one of the communities that was cut off. His house was in a low area, and he had water almost 1m deep in his main floor.

Most of the island got nothing worse than a bad storm. Parts of the Bonavista Peninsula got 250mm of rain over a period of 2 days.

And Igor was only a tropical storm when it hit Newfoundland. I can't imagine what you folks in the Caribbean or on the Gulf coast see when a CAT3 or 4 (or 5!) hits.

Sid

Edit: sorry, Marystown isn't on the Bonavista Peninsula, but is on the Burin Peninsula, the part of the Province that the Newfies call "The Boot". It was there that they got 250mm of rain.

10. Let me put it this way
Every parish in Jamaica has severe damage and we were hit by a Tropical Depression not even a Tropical Storm. What really hit us was the heaviest rain we have ever witnessed in Jamaica - add to that the lightning and that mashed up electricity for over 176,000 households.

I have never seen so many properties undermined by water. There are three not far from here (close to the original Manley family home) that will be in the gully shortly - all have already lost land to the gully as the retaining wall just fell apart.

The really hard part is that the government can't even collect on hurricane insurance.

Sometimes I think those of us accustomed to big hurricanes are better prepared. Thanks for the geography lesson - I know very little about the area. :D
