1. considering Beck had a tv show and Sarah Palin to advertise his rally for weeks ahead of time...
one estimate was 175,000 - that's a lot of folks, esp. since this seemed truly grass roots. No money coming in from the Democrats.

4. Right! Very limited media buildup before.
The only media coverage I heard prior to yesterday's event came from progressive sources -- the M$M was virtually silent.

2. Why didn't Pres. Obama attend?
Or VP Biden?

If the President or Vice President had agreed to be speakers, this would have been a massively attended rally and would have shown new enthusiasm for Democrats.

So, why was this event so low-key from the people it was intended to support?

Yet another misstep in my opinion by the White House and the DNC.

7. Sorry, it was not the place of the President and VP to attend the rally
It was a people's rally. If they would have attended the right media would have a field day with it. I can just hear it now if they did, Obama rallied a crowd like Hitler, Obama and Biden start their own rally. A dictatorship in the making. See we told you Obama wants to take over the country, on and on and on.

This was a rally to encourage voting. I watched the rally - it was what it was meant to be.

10. Obama NOT a supporter of "the people"?
Crazy.

Pres. Obama spoke at a huge political rally in Madison earlier this week -- I didn't hear any charges of "Hitler" or "dictatorship" after that event.

It's election season, politicians campaign ... it would have been no different if Obama and/or Biden had shown up at yesterday's rally. Indeed, it would have been the top news today.

8. That would have been a big mistake
This rally was about the people and by the people, if Obama or Biden had been there it would have undermined the very purpose of the rally and would have been said to have been put together by the White House and the Democrats. Remember this was real grassroots not like teabagging events.

9. This was a grass roots rally...
...the president would have done a disservice showing up for this event. And because some of the groups that appeared would have been viewed as controversial, the President would have been tied to all of them and the story would end up being "President Obama appears at event with CPUSA and World Workers Party".

This rally did exactly what it set out to do. It re-energized the base, re-connected many of our grass roots groups, and acted as a trial run GOTV effort.

It should never have been built up as something that could compete in numbers with Beck's rally. It was a completely different type of event. Big Ed was a great speaker, but he should not have talked like he could turn out 300k people as I think I heard he did. Expectations should have been set low so that the rally could meet or exceed them, instead turnout expectations were set high and were impossible to meet.

12. Beck's rally had a real estimated crowd of 58,000 - Saturday's was 150,000-175,000
Edited on Sun Oct-03-10 11:32 AM by old mark
the lower figure from the MSM, the higher from "organizers" of the rally via MSNBC news this morning.

How was Beck's rally bigger - did they count the geese overhead?
FWIW, I think we really did well - it was all by the people, not by any media or government funding.
