DeMint and Coburn block Women's History Museum in DC
Edited on Sun Oct-03-10 11:38 AM by ehrnst
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/10/01/AR2010100100048.html

<snip>For seven years, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) has introduced legislation to establish such a museum, and it passed the House last October and a key Senate committee in April.

The bill simply names a desired site at 12th Street and Independence Avenue SW. It stresses that the museum planners will pay for the federal land and build the museum with private money. The estimated cost is $150 million.

Backers have accumulated $8 million and say they sense some momentum. But there's the Washington caveat: Two senators, Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), placed a hold on the measure in July, blocking a vote before the full Senate. "At a time when we face a crushing national debt of more than $13 trillion and annual deficits of more than $1 trillion, it is simply not the appropriate role of this Congress to approve legislation with the potential to put taxpayers on the hook for millions of dollars for purposes of establishing an entity that is duplicative of more than 100 existing federal, state, and private efforts," Coburn wrote in a letter to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).</snip>

Do these jerks read anything put in front of them by a woman or a Dem???

Edited to correct headline.

4. So the repugs do not like:
women
students
gays
union workers
teachers
firefighters
police
hispanics
the middle class
the environment
small businesses
vets
progressives
atheists
and education

What they do like is old white rich men.

These elections should not even be close.

8. There are many museums for individual women, and for particular events...
but this would be the first for women in general.

So, he is partially right but he is still a dildo.

(And a cowardly one at that, for not saying he just doesn't think women deserve a museum.)

6. Someone needs to do a bit of checking into what they have voted for as far as spending
and compare just exactly what they feel is worthy of american tax payers funds...what needs to be taking a cut is backdoor political mergers that require american tax payers funds to aid in ensuring corporations remain profitable for a simple few and not the whole of this country...its pretty easy to see exactly where our tax money is going or where far too many wish it to go...

11. When DeMint said on _Meet the Press_ once that
gay people and unmarried women who were sexually active should not be allowed to teach school, I couldn't help but notice that he didn't say unmarried heterosexual men who were sexually active should not be allowed to teach school:
MR. RUSSERT: You also, when asked about your comments about gay teachers, said this: "I would have given the same answer when asked if a single woman, who was pregnant and living with her boyfriend, should be hired to teach my third-grade children." Do you also still believe that, that a single mom should not be a teacher in South Carolina schools?

Another HuffPo article is also very interesting:
Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) raised eyebrows on Monday when his office emailed GOP aides to let them know that he would block all legislation that he and his staff have not personally cleared until the November elections.

Now, however, a Democratic senator is coming forward to relay that DeMint's threat of grinding the consideration of bills to a halt is nothing new. It has been a formal policy of his since Obama was elected president.

"It is my understanding Jim DeMint has had a standing hold on everything throughout this two year process," Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) told the Huffington Post on Tuesday. "When I have had amendments on a couple of occasions, I have been told: 'Absolutely, we in the Republican leadership are fine but you are going to have to clear it with Jim DeMint because he has a standing hold on everything.' So I'm not sure this is a real change from what he has been doing."

DeMint is such a scumbag. he is a real obstacle to progress in this country. The Democratic leadership should make his obstructionism much more public than they have.

15. DeMint & Coburn are in The Family formerly of C Street
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2009/07/21/c_street

Coburn has said that doctors who perform abortions should get the death penalty
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2009/11/10/stupak_pitts

he also was sued for sterilizing a young woman without her consent
http://dir.salon.com/news/feature/2004/09/13/coburn/index.html

and I am sure everyone recalls this incident:
The GOP's Health Solution
Dr. Tom Coburn tells the wife of a brain-injury victim to suck it up.
http://www.slate.com/id/2226623

Q: Sen. Coburn, we need help. My husband has traumatic brain injury. His health insurance will not cover him to eat and drink. And what I need to know is: Are you going to help him? Where he can eat and drink? We left the nursing home, and they told us we are on our own. He left with a feeding tube. I have been working with him, but I'm not a speech pathologist, a professional that takes six years for a masters', and I'm trying to get him to eat and drink again {inaud}.

A: Well, I think—first of all, yeah. We'll help. The first thing we will do is to see what we can do, individually, to help you, through our office. But the other thing that is missing in this debate is us as neighbors, helping people that need our help. {Applause.} You know we tend to ... {Applause.} The idea that the government is a solution to our problems is an inaccurate, a very inaccurate statement.
