Court: CPS tenured teachers can't be fired

The Chicago Teachers Union celebrated a legal victory after suing the Chicago Public Schools for giving CEO Ron Huberman the power to fire teachers based on performance.

Last summer, more than 700 tenured teachers were fired. Now, a judge has ruled that their layoffs were handled improperly.

Some teachers said they feel vindicated by the judge's decision; some say they feel like they got their respect back.

"I feel honored. I feel that I have my dignity back. This is all about tenure meaning something," said laid off teacher Pat Gerard.

1. Meanwhile, we found out last week that there's no tenure in our school.

Oh, the tenured teachers have written documentation from the school district that manages our charter school that they have tenure, but the state board of ed ruled this last summer that the teacher tenure law in our state specifically excludes charters, even ones run by public school districts in which the teachers have the same contract as the school district's teachers.

So, um, yeah. No more tenure at our school. *sigh*
