Man had said Toyota’s sudden acceleration to blame for fatal crash

CORPUS CHRISTI — A Corpus Christi attorney who worked to free a Minnesota man from prison related to a fatal Toyota crash will receive an award on Thursday from the Innocence Project of Minnesota.

Local attorney Bob Hilliard and Minnesota-based attorney Brent Schafer will receive the newly created “Never Forgotten” award for their efforts in Koua Fong Lee’s case.

Lee, who spent nearly 2 1/2 years in prison, was driving a 1996 Toyota Camry when it crashed into the back of another car in St. Paul in 2006. Three people were killed and Lee was sentenced to eight years in prison for criminal vehicular homicide.

Hilliard has said he took on the case pro bono because he believed the vehicle, not Lee, was to blame for the fatal crash.
