Town won't pay cops until 2011 - What kind of society is this?
http://www.post-trib.com/news/lake/2776296,winfield1006.article

WINFIELD -- The town council Tuesday voted 3-2 against paying the Lake County Sheriff's Department the $100,000 it owes, and to keep the money in the bank at least until Jan. 1, when a new sheriff takes over.

...

Most expressed concern over the lack of police protection after Lake County Sheriff Roy Dominguez halted routine patrols of the town Oct. 1 after the town refused to make a $100,000 payment it promised to make in January.

While it's probably true that state and county cops will step in to protect these people for the next three months, I must beg the question: What has become of the United States of America?

Police, Fire, Emergency services...These are basic human rights that every civilized nation on the planet recognizes as necessary for the good of society. It's bad enough that it took until the year 2010 for a mediocre health care reform bill to pass.

Meanwhile, all the money goes to the military, where it costs 50 million dollars to kill one Taliban.

I'm just sickened by it all.

2. Teabaggers and Libertarians: American Taliban
This is class warfare! Corporate politicians and commentators have pushed this for 20 years. No new taxes, no government money for abortions, home schooling and on and on. This is the logical conclusion. The have's want to keep theirs and they sure don't want anyone else to own anything.

3. Well, the cops could refuse to write any tickets until they are paid. THAT should get attention!
And I agree. We throw billions (yes, billions) at the so called "military" when most of it goes to private companies like Halliburton that can't even account for what they did with the cash. But hey, who needs police, firemen, and emergency workers?

I would fully support the military budget if the money WENT TO THE DAMN MILITARY!!!

6. It was difficult to find out where Winston was...
it is located in NW Indiana...a state that has the same mindset as the Tennessee area of the fire. Fed and Staties will cover for us(without compensation he supposes).

7. You said it, Tony
This isn't The United States of America, it's AmeriCo, Inc., a wholly-owned multinational corporation. I am so very glad I never had kids. I really am. I grew up tribal, where people helped each other. I guess that's my problem--I'm from an "inferior" people. I hate living in a society where it's all "I've got mine, screw you" all the time. It's depressing.

8. Most Americans are living in an ideologicially pure fantasy world
Remember when someone in the Bush Junta dismissively called people like us members of the "reality-based community"?
