SF Board of Supervisors approves bid for America's Cup 2013
Edited on Wed Oct-06-10 02:03 PM by alp227
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors voted 9-2 for the city to enter a bid for the 34th America's Cup regatta event that will be held in 2013. Only two supervisors, the reputed hardline liberals Chris Daly and John Avalos, voted no. Daly stated: "It's a billionaire's regatta. Why are we going out to raise $270 million for Larry fucking Ellison?" and complained about "using the people's money so that a billionaire can have his yacht race." America's Cup is estimated to bring thousands of jobs and around a billion dollars to SF.

1. one of the Koch brothers won it one year

although he was the playboy black sheep brother, who sold his share in the company to his brothers (and has been suing them ever since)

maybe SF can have the slogan 'things go better with Koch'

(Koch is pronounced 'coke')

2. That would be the best AC ever!
The constantly changing tides and currents and fog and wind coming through the Gate (30+ knots at 1:00P.M. so precise that you can set your watch by it in the summer) make for some of the most challenging sailing conditions anywhere. Add to that the fact that it could be watched by millions with bay views being accessible from almost everywhere and the most picturesque backdrop anywhere and you have the BEST AMERICAS CUP EVER!

As to the cup being a rich mans sport, name me one professional sport that isn't these days.

4. Really? Try getting a ticket to the final four or the Superbowl.
Are you trying to tell me that the owners and players are middle class working folk? Face it, they are all rich people.

5. Oh whoops I thought you meant as in audience.
Normally I see regattas as an upper-class sport (a reason why conservatives think John Kerry was out of touch). But yeah most major sporting events=expensive.
