Democrats' Secret Weapon in 2012: Marijuana?

The Wall Street Journal reports that Democratic strategists "are studying a California marijuana-legalization initiative to see if similar ballot measures could energize young, liberal voters in swing states for the 2012 presidential election."

"Democratic strategists liken the marijuana effort to the 2004 ballot drives to ban gay marriage in Ohio and 10 other states. Whether those measures helped then-President George W. Bush win that year remains a point of debate, as turnout was high even in states without the issue on the ballot. But many conservatives say the measure drove thousands to the polls in Ohio, the election's central battleground, where Mr. Bush won by just two percentage points, or about 118,000 votes."

"Now, some Democratic strategists say marijuana legalization could do the same for their party."

1. I know many young people feel marijuana is unfairly targeted since alcohol is legal
hypocrisy is not lost on the youth. the time for legalizing marijuana is now - hell it should have happened under Carter but that's a different story. i believe this would indeed energize the liberals. i know it would for me. it's a matter of freedom, and being allowed a personal choice other than alcohol. :smoke: :hippie:

7. Young people? Fuck. I know pot smokers in their 80s.

I have a relative who used to get high with Jazz musicians in the years immediately following World War II.

It's ridiculous, and well past time we end prohibition on this relatively benign substance. Legalize it, regulate it, and tax it, already.

8. Someone tell Jack Conway to GET A FUCKING CLUE YOU DUMB ASS!!!
He might lose in Kentucky because of his madness against reefer and farmers. Rand Paul is beating him over the head with his oppressive stance against medical marijuana.

10. It won't be Obama who frees the weed on November 2.
It will be the voters of California, or at least I certainly hope so. Proposition 19 is running four points ahead in the average of all polls, but still under 50%. It's going to depend on turnout and how the undecideds break.

11. It depends on what poll you look at...
http://elections.firedoglake.com/2010/10/04/prop-19-gains-slightly-in-latest-poll-winning-48-41/

And meanwhile...

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Election-2010/2010/1006/New-poll-shows-California-tilting-against-legalized-marijuana

If the votes are counted honestly, Proposition 19 WILL pass. Robo-polls have consistently shown higher support for 19 than human administered polls. Which most likely indicates that polling of every sort is undercounting the number of Yes votes that will be cast in the privacy of a voting booth.

Aside from fundamentalist Christians, Mormons and old people, most segments of society support the legalization of marijuana. Even non-religious conservatives under 50, in my experience. And if ever there were an issue that Libertarians will mobilize for, it's marijuana legalization.
