I know, because I've seen it tried on them. They glory, they revel, in the notion that they're being "persecuted" for the sake of Jesus. Oh, the blessings promised them in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew) and the Sermon on the Plain (Luke) for being reviled of men in their holy work of advancing the gospel. There may be a whole bunch of stuff in the Bible on all sorts of topics, but for the Westboro folks, it all comes down to their sick notion that being reviled is all that counts; that's the Mark of the Elect, and the way they know they're following Jesus.

Passages like "Love does not insist on its own way" have no meaning in their universe. Concepts such as reconciliation disappear in their zeal for separating the light (themselves, naturally) from the dark (you and me and all the people we know). The only effective technique I've seen used against these nincompoops is fierce kindness and unfailing solicitude. Bigotry being hot and thirsty work, when we encountered these charmers on a hot and humid Kansas City afternoon, we purchased cold drinks from street vendors and offered them to the sign-wavers. They wouldn't and couldn't take the refreshment from our hands, but after we left the beverages by them on the sidewalk and left them alone, like skittish feral cats, they took the drinks and rather quickly departed.
