MINNEAPOLIS - Students, staff, faculty and community members concerned about the effects of budget cuts to public education will rally Thursday at noon at the University of Minnesota.
The rally, sponsored by the Chop-from-the-Top Coalition, will be held on Northrop Mall on the east bank of the university’s Minneapolis campus. It will feature a number of speakers, including gubernatorial candidate Mark Dayton, who will talk about the negative effects of repeated budget cuts and other attacks on the public education system and what steps can be taken to make public education a priority.
Phyllis Walker, president of AFSCME Local 3800, and coalition member said, “While the budget for public education gets slashed, over 250 administrators at the University of Minnesota earn more than $200,000 per year. Increasing layoffs and furloughs reduce vital services for students and make things even tougher financially for front line staff who are already struggling to get by.”
