Less than a week ago, a libertarian fire department decided to let a family's house burn down over an unpaid 75 Dollar fee. No matter that there were living creatures trapped inside the house, no matter that the father of the family offered to pay whatever the firefighters demanded, they would not budge and they would not help. Their position was: "It is the principle that counts."
Perhaps I'm slow on the uptake, but a metaphor struck me the other night. A metaphor of another house burning down. A house with over 300 million people in it, and with sea turtles inside. And then there was a fire department that said: well, they didn't vote for us, so we'll do nothing to quench the flames. And no matter how much compromise was offered, they still refused to help: "Hell no, it is a matter of principle."
I am talking, of course, about the USA and the GOP. And then I realised why this metaphor had not been made before. At least the libertarian firefighters didn't set fire to the house before refusing to help out.
