The federal government will spend an estimated $63.6 billion this year alone on the food stamp program – up from $34.6 billion in 2008, the last year of the Bush administration. The District of Columbia, New Mexico and Alabama are the latest states and jurisdictions to implement the broader eligibility. Beginning with passage of the Welfare Reform Act in 1996, states were given the option to adopt broad-based categorical eligibility, but few did initially. According to the latest USDA statistics, 31 states are utilizing this tool to help people put food on the table .

On February 27, President Obama signed into law the “Social Security Disability Applicant’s Access to Professional Representation Act of 2010.” The new law amends the Social Security Protection Act of 2004 to permanently extend attorney fee withholding procedures to qualified non-attorney representatives.

"They must pass a stringent exam administered by SSA as well as meet other professional criteria. We also have in-house attorneys who work exclusively on disability cases. The Social Security Administration determines a standard fee paid to all Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) advocacy groups, including advocacy lawyers and attorneys.

The Social Security Administration is expecting to receive more than 3 million applications for Social Security disability benefits in 2010. The new law gives persons with disabilities accessibility to a broader pool of expert disability representatives to help them file for Social Security disability benefits.

Government Launching New Initiative To End Homelessness

A proposal announced Tuesday at the White House by Cabinet officers, called "Opening Doors," suggests a major shift in the federal approach to homelessness. The effort would be driven mainly by integration of support services and applying state and local models at the federal level, according to the federal Interagency Council on Homelessness.

The effort calls for ending chronic homelessness – where people cycle through shelters and hospitals – and homelessness among military veterans in five years, and for ending homelessness among families and children by 2020. The plan aims to eventually end all types of homelessness.

Funding for the effort includes some of the $2 billion in stimulus money allocated last year to the 19 federal agencies in the council. The money, used for a variety of services related to the homeless, is in addition to $3.79 billion budgeted for such services in 2010.

The Obama administration is seeking $4.2 billion for the council's agencies in the 2011 fiscal year, including money specific to the new plan's initiatives, said Jason Kravitz, a council spokesman.

We're doing well. I got stiffed for a job opportunity here in town that would have allowed me to get off the road...but it would have drastically cut my salary as well. But I almost have my employer sold on allowing me to basically work from home, hopefully I just have to make it through one last fourth quarter.
