Eurostar to Step Up Europe's Train Travel "Revolution"
Edited on Fri Oct-08-10 11:18 AM by marmar

via MassTransitMag:

UNITED KINGDOM - Eurostar, the operators of the high-speed passenger rail link between Britain and mainland Europe, on Thursday vowed to continue the "revolution" in European train travel with an expansion of its network and fleet.

From 2011, Eurostar International Ltd will embark on a major investment programme of 700 million pounds (1.1 billion dollars) for the complete overhaul and refurbishment of its existing fleet and the purchase of 10 new trains, the company announced in London.

Capacity would be increased by 20 per cent with the purchase of the new trains, which are expected to be delivered in 2014. They will be able to carry 900 passengers each, reach speeds of 320 kilometers an hour and cut travel time between London and Paris to two hours.

The announcement coincided with the presentation in London Thursday of the Eurostar e320, a state-of-the-art design by German engineering firm Siemens, which has been named preferred bidder by Eurostar. ..........(more)

2. Indeed. I just returned from poor little old Portugal
and what a nice integrated transit system they have: metro, local trains, suburban, long distance...interchangeable, single ticket, quick, quiet, modern.

I am embarrassed for the US.

3. Yes, same in tiny little Belgium, who also has it's high speed train!
And. . .did you know that anyone over 65 in Belgium can travel for FREE on all public transportation, and for very low cost ($2.50 per day) by train, even for long trips?

5. In the movie "End of Suburbia" one of the commentators noted that America......
...... has a passenger rail system the Bulgarians would be ashamed of.

4. On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well by seventy six we'll be okay

What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free
